Arthur Schopenhauer's Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung is one of the most important philosophical works of the nineteenth century, the basic statement of one important stream of post-Kantian thought. It is without question Schopenhauer's greatest work. Conceived and published before the philosopher was 30 and expanded 25 years later, it is the summation of a lifetime of thought.
For 70 years, the only unabridged English translation of this work was the Haldane-Kemp collaboration. In 1958, a new translation by E. F. J. Payne appeared that decisively supplanted the older one. Payne's translation is superior because it corrects nearly 1,000 errors and omissions in the Haldane-Kemp translation, and it is based on the definitive 1937 German edition of Schopenhauer's work prepared by Dr. Arthur Hübscher. The greatest Philosopher ever lived

Schopenhauer is definitly the greatest philosopher ever lived. This book is his only masterpiece. Building on Kant's thing-in-itself Schopenhauer created the concept of the "Will". All of Schopenhauer philosophy revolve on a single idea which is the "Will" getting aquainted of itself in all its objectification. "The World as Will and representation Volume I" contains the main body of his philosophy. Vol. II and all the rest of his books is just an illumination and expantion of the concept of the Will outlined in Vol I. As a prerequisit he demands that his reader must be familiar with his introductory book "The fourfold root of the principle of suffecient reason" that explains how our intellect works, percieve and makes a mental pictures (representation). Because he is building on Kant's philosophy he also demands from the reader to be familiar of his critisism of it. Schopenhauer considers Kant to be the greatest philosopher before him for his philosophy about metaphysics, thing-in-itself and the combination between the will's necessity and freedom that never been established before.
Idealism is the basis of Schopenhauer's philosophy that is why it is difficult to understand from the first reading. His book must be red at least twice and by reading his other books which is variation on the same theme, his philosophy gets clearer.
The philosophy of Schopenhauer deals with metaphisics therfore could not be complete. I recommend a good book that tries to complete Schopenhauer's work. The Will's Harmonic Motion: The Completion of Schopenhauer's Philosophy. The reader will find in it a fresh look at Schopenhauer great philosophy and takes the concept of the will to its limit and conclusion.

You Must Decide For Yourself

I read the first paragraph and had to put the book down for a week to think about it before I went on. Schopenhauer's theory is existentialist fodder for a lifetime. An abstract thinker's bible. The intensity of this work may prove to be contemplation for an eternity. Without going into my personal interpretation -- because I believe we all see things from a different perspective - one thing I can say is that The World as Will and Representation will start some cranial fireworks!

Ken Kollman is Frederick G. L. Huetwell Professor, Professor of Political Science, and Director of the International Institute at the University of Michigan. He has written numerous books and articles on political parties, political organizations, and elections. He is principal investigator of the Constituency-Level Elections Archive, the largest repository of election results data in the world.

Interesting case study approach to centralization of organizations. I am predisposed to distrust qualitative work and always suspicious of writers on the Catholic Church. I would be more inclined to believe this if the Catholic chapter were removed. While I understand it is very much political science way to remove the theology from the institution that is the Church, I don't believe that when that is actually the stated logic behind the organizational structure that one can just remove it by fiat and then impose a different logic on the body. Regardless, I think the basic framework of argument is logical and coherent and that the conclusions on the EU and for other organizations were insightful. I do think a counter example in full rather than the brief mentions in the concluding chapter would have strengthened the argument

About the Author
Since 2001 Walter Cardinal Kasper has served as president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity at the Vatican. Formerly a professor of theology and diocesan bishop in Germany, he has written in the fields of systematic and ecumenical theology. Cardinal Kasper is a former member of the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches.

Tradition and Renewal of Catholic Church Leadership

Difficulty and scandal are nothing new in God's church. This latest scandal of child abuse is especially troubling and threatens to injure the credibility of the U.S. Catholic church for generations to come.

No serious thinking person will deny that a measure of reform and renewal is needed to restore confidence and integrity to the Catholic community. What should we do? Where should we look? Can traditional roles and the wisdom they offer help us or must we change the church radically as we know it?

In Leadership in the Chirch, Cardinal Walter Kasper, (a distinguished theologian, Bishop and now President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity), argues that traditional roles properly understood can continue to serve the Christian community well today. He makes these arguments in a series of 7 essays that collectively ride under the title of his book.

In the essay "The Diaconate", Kasper reviews the history of the Diaconate noting its rise, its lapse after the Council of Trent and its renewal at Vatican II. Kasper calls for greater understanding and use of this ancient and important office to relieve priests and bishops of certain duties given the worldwide shortage of priests.

His advice and insights on priestly and episcopal office are the second and third essays. Kasper calls on priests and bishops to remember that they are representatives of Christ and servants rather than officeholders and power-seekers. If you want to know what should be expected of a shepard--be he bishop or priest--these essays are required reading for all.

The essay on apostolic succession breaks no new ground, nor should it. While it is an ecumenical problem, the recent ordination of a gay man as an Episcopal bishop makes a common understanding very difficult.

Canon law is for most an arcane topic and only a tiny fraction of laypersons have any understanding of its use. But this essay is important reading in light of the child abuse scandals and abuse of authority by some American bishops. Kasper rightly critizes its overly legalistic use since the 1300's. The true purpose of Canon Law is to promote mercy and justice. As bad as the sex abuse scandals were in selected churches across the United States, a strong argument can be made that some priests (those guilty of only an isolated incident many years ago), were treated unfairly. Canon law is being applied unjustly to them. What happened to mercy?

Most reviewers will seize on the famous essay number 6 titled "The Universal Church and the Local Church" because of Kasper's disagreement with Cardinal Ratsinzer regarding the relationships between the local and the universal church. Kasper questions Ratsinzer's claims regarding the degree to which the universal church is primary over the local church.

Finally, Kasper sums up with reflections on the future of ecumenism and its implications for Catholics, Jews, Protestants and others.

German theologians can be difficult to read but Kasper's writing is clear and elegant and Brian McNeil's English transalation from the original German is superior.

The alien androgyny, the spiritual eroticism, the royal conceit: the outsized persona of the artist currently known as Prince fascinates on numerous levels. In this detailed biography by journalist and attorney Hahn, anecdotes of a personal nature mix with close readings of Prince's musical output, producing few big secrets but plenty of insight. Prince's early days are recounted as a frenzy of musical education, with influences ranging from the funky dexterity of Sly Stone, to the tight perfectionism of James Brown, to the spiritual yearning of Stevie Wonder. (Hahn also names a less obvious influence in Joni Mitchell, whose lyrics Prince apparently purloined sometimes whole cloth.) The young Prince also absorbs the mechanics of the studio like a sponge. When the child prodigy meets with early success, signing to Warner Brothers at age 19, he blossoms into the personality of flamboyant and controlling self-absorption that fans have now watched mutate for over two decades. Constructed from interviews with producers, sound engineers, journalists and publicists, though not as frequently with Prince's inner circle, the book portrays Prince as a kind of outsider artist, eccentric and self-centered to the extreme, rarely leaving the enchanted, Minneapolis garden of his childhood, where he has managed to build himself into a living, protean god. In the late 1970s, Minnesotan Prince Rogers Nelson began releasing funk-fortified albums on which he was the only musician and singer. First as an underground phenomenon, then as a much-hyped purveyor of a new kind of excruciatingly danceable, sexy music, he became a pop phenomenon. He shed two-thirds of his name, formed a series of bands, made some movies, and eventually dropped his name entirely, preferring to identify himself with an unpronounceable symbol. Then he feuded with his record company, inaugurating a series of negative career moves that rivaled Mike Tyson's in self-destructiveness and rendered him little more than fodder for late-night TV wisecracks. Hahn covers this ascent and descent in gritty detail, thanks to sources that include many Prince collaborators, though not the incredibly funky Apollonia, Morris Day, or George Clinton (whose career Prince restarted in the 1990s). Considering the longevity of rock careers these days, Prince might rebound yet. Still, he has left his mark on rock style as well as music, and Hahn has given us the arc of that mark. Mike Tribby

Fair and balanced look at an eccentric musical genius. Worth reading.

I didn't read this book until some 11 years after it was published. And in those 11 years Prince saw his career resurrected and he rebounded with some great material, fun tours, and he still looks and sounds as cool as ever. But the years covered in the book? Oh my!

The book is very detailed about his life, friendships, girlfriends, business activities, music output and inspiration, personality quirks, etc. The reporting seems very fair and even-handed (even if author Hahn refers to Prince's personal and professional "flare" when he really means "flair". They're not the same word, Alex).

I would love to read a follow-up to this book that catches us up on Prince's career post-2004. And if Hahn could write it, even better. This book certainly brings Prince down to Earth for the rest of us and makes him look oh so very human. Eccentric and bizarre, but human.

I did manage to have a brief personal encounter with Prince in 2007, and perhaps that's why I grew interested in reading up on him a bit more. (I suppose one could also claim that Prince had a brief personal encounter with ME in 2007. I wonder if he reads up on me? Nah. Probably not.)

Leaves You Cold And Wanting More

A meticulously engaging biography of Prince, "Possessed" pulls the reader in and won't let go. This is the portrait of a genius who, through his own machinations, became something of a monster. The book tells the story of a Prince who is self-destructive, narcissistic, insecure and cloistered; a prodigy who changed music while managing to alienate virtually everyone in his life.
By 1982-83, Prince had forced the world to sit up and take notice. Having skillfully blended elements of numerous musical genres to create a uniquely eclectic signature, he was determined to avoid being pigeonholed by a limited artistic identity. This determination, combined with his rising popularity and enigmatic, iconoclastic image began to raze traditional barriers. All of this culminated in and peaked with "Purple Rain"- a body of work that enjoyed universal appeal and propelled him to the top of the pop/rock world. But, ironically, he rebelled (in a sense) against his own success, deciding to follow "Purple Rain"with "Around The World In A Day", a work designed to remind everyone that commercial success could and would be subordinate to the importance of innovative artistry. These reinventions continued, accompanied by critical praise and declining sales, and in the midst of a musical landscape that was ever-changing. In this sense, at least from a commercial perspective, Prince became the victim of a new music world he'd been instrumental in creating.
Published in 2003, this bio ends in 2002. The story of Prince between 1989 and that year is not a pretty one, giving chilling accounts of his treatment others, from subordinates and band members to the Warner Brothers executives who'd helped make him a star. One consistent and recurring theme is his inability to treat those around him with empathy- sometimes common courtesy. By the mid 90's, he'd alienated most everyone and, as he became ever more insular, his creativity suffered along with his image.
But it seems that none of this mattered much to Prince. From the beginning, it seems that total control was his ultimate aim and, in the end, that's exactly what he got. The genius and success of his first ten years as a recording artist provided a lifelong security blanket, one that apparently made him bulletproof regardless of his actions.
Though "Scathing" (as one critic described this book) "Possessed" is written with no obvious agenda. One would be a fool to call it complimentary to Prince on balance, but it does cover his charitable deeds and contributions, his struggles to open up, and flashes of a guy who could be nice. If you don't find Prince Rogers Nelson an interesting character, this biography is certain to change your mind. If you do, then this work should be on your must-read list, because you ain't seen nothing yet.

Whew! What a great novel!

I had to walk away from this book a couple of times while reading this- THAT'S HOW ENCOMPASSING THIS BOOK WAS FOR ME! I started this last night, and couldn't seem to stop, except when the suspense actually felt too intense for me. It had all the elements of a great continuing storyline (If you haven't read Skater Boy, you NEED to read that before this- My Skater Boy is a sequel) of romance filled with angst, trauma, despair, then hope.

I've been recommending Skater Boy to friends, and now have a second book to recommend them!

My only point of sadness is that one point of Hindley's life wasn't resolved- but I hope that the subplot regarding the one who was in jail (sorry, don't want to spoil any part of this book for you) gets some attention in future books. I know that timeline-wise, it's not possible to resolve this, but I'd just love to have this addressed in future books!

Great Romance Contiunes

I didn't think that this story could get any better, But it did. It started off right where book 1 left off at. This one turns out to be Hindley's turn to open up about her past and share her secrets. OK let me talk about the ending which had been bugging me since I finished the story. I didn't like it don't get me wrong I like the way the story turned out in fact I love how the story turned out I just didn't like the huge jump that is did that kinda sucked.

Perfection

Kay, If you read your reviews (most authors do, but some choose not to), just know that I loved this story so much. At the end of book one I downloaded book 2 and continued the story of Rory Gregor and Hindley Hagan. It was funny in places, heartbreaking in others. The story's plot flowed perfectly and I just loved it.
