I really enjoyed this book and think that anybody that ever wondered about the mystique of this popular guitar will enjoy it too

Mr. Hunter has written a very complete book about one of the most iconic electric guitars ever made. He tells the complete history, explains many of the factors that have made a classic Les Paul such a prized electric guitar. He has short glimpses into the guitar players who have played Les Pauls in their careers. He includes lots of pictures. In fact the pictures rival the text, they tell such a complete story of the artists and their axes. He also includes album covers of the major works in which the artist used his Les Paul. He shows pictures of the custom Les Paul models that Gibson has issued honoring the guitarists that are famous for playing Les Paul guitars.

Mr. Hunter has included some technical details that will be very interesting to guitar players who would like customize their guitars. He talks about pickups, bridges, and various other technical details. He explains how different models of Les Pauls were built, what wood was used, and how they contributed to the sound and playability of the different models. He also has some blueprints and wiring diagrams that were used to build the early Les Pauls.

I give this book 5 Stars out of 5 and 2 Big Thumbs Up! I really enjoyed this book and think that anybody that ever wondered about the mystique of this popular guitar will enjoy it too.

Simply Stunning

The Gibson Les Paul is the latest of Dave Hunter’s books which look closely at a particular guitar model. The first two were the Tele and the Strat, now we have the Les Paul. Visually the book is simply stunning. Les Pauls are famous for their magnificent tops and the book is packed with fantastic high-quality photographs of Les Pauls. These are just as drool-worthy as the pictures in Beauty of the Burst.

A feature of this series is Hunter’s profiles of famous players who have used the guitars. It is terrific that he is so eclectic in covering a wide range of players, but this also contains my one criticism of the book. To have omitted John Fogerty, who played a number of Black Beauties, and Leslie West, who brought the Junior to prominence, is poor, especially when far lesser players, e.g. Buckethead, have made the cut. One star off for this glaring oversight.

Hunter does well to include the variations on the Les Paul, so we are treated to Juniors and Specials as well as the SG in a range of formats, and he even looks at some of the oddball versions such as the Recording and Signature models.

The book presents an excellent detailed history of the guitar, with some interesting information and stories. The final section is a technical dissection of the Les Paul and discussion of how its parts, construction and features all contribute to the range of Les Paul sounds.

Dave Hunter is the author of many guitar books and his expertise as a writer comes across very strongly. He seems to have toned down his at times over the top style here and the book is better for it. If you are at all interested in electric guitar and especially if you like Les Pauls, this book is a must. I have a number of books on the Les Paul and this is the best.

Few writers are able to capture the origins and romance of vintage instrument, as well as how it fits into musical history like Dave Hunter ( check out his similar books on the Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster).... This book has the perfect combination on the history of the guitar, it's evolution over the years, and the players that have made this guitar an iconic instrument, all while being filled with amazing pictures.... Simply a must have for any guitar fan, or pop culture fan for that matter....

About the Author
Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens are the authors of more than thirty books, including numerous New York Times bestselling Star Trek novels. Like a visit to the ultimate "Trek" museum

"The Art of Star Trek," by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, is to date the ultimate "coffee table" book for devoted Star Trek fans. This book, which was published in 1995, covers all aspects of "Trek" history up until its publication date. Through text and plentiful illustrations, the book celebrates the visual artistry that has been such an essential component of the "Trek" phenomenon.
The book deals with each of the specific series from the original until "Voyager," including both the often neglected animated series and the aborted "Phase II" series of the mid-1970s. All films from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" to "Star Trek Generations" are also covered.
The amount and quality of items in this visual "museum" are astounding. There are behind-the-scenes photos, concept drawings, photos of models, prosthetic makeup designs, storyboards, movie posters from around the world, closeup shots of props, and more. Particularly interesting were the shots of certain props and aliens which were barely seen in fleeting shots, but which represent great imagination and artistry.
Also noteworthy are the drawings which document the evolution of both the original series "Enterprise" and the "Next Generation" ship. I was fascinated by the concept drawings of possible "Enterprises" for the aborted "Phase II" series, as well as by the rejected new uniforms for the first "Next Generation" feature film.
The concise but clear text is a good match for the wealth of glorious, full-color photographs. This book is, from start to finish, a visual feast for "Trek" fans.

Although available for the kindle, I do not suggest it. I bought it for my iPad, thinking the pictures would be quite good. Truth is, the quality of the pictures is very poor, and small. You can click on them to make them bigger, but they only become slightly larger, and are extremely pixelated., negating the major point of this book.
This is one prime example of why some books just do not work in the electronic medium.
Buy the bound book only. Buying the kindle one is like flushing money down the toilet.

A beautiful look at evolution of the "look" of Star Trek

With the profusion of "making of" books about Star Trek that have come out over the years, one might think there aren't too many aspects of the story that haven't been told. But "The Art of Star Trek" brings out new aspects of the history of the show and the feature films by exploring the evolution of the look and feel of Star Trek's sets, ship models, costumes, and props. Lavishly illustrated in color and black and white, the reader is treated to an intimate look at the entire creative process, from rough conceptual sketches to the finished artwork, props, costumes, sets, etc., as they appeared on the screen! Detailed photographs of props from all incarnations of Star Trek yield some amazing revelations, like Klingon belt buckles made from bubble wrap, and early phasers used in the pilot episodes that have typewriter keys for controls. The story is told chronologically from "The Cage" to Voyager, including some fascinating conceptual pieces from aborted TV series and feature film projects in the 1970s. This is an absolutely gorgeous volume that would make a handsome addition to any Star Trek fan's collection

Essential Reading

By the Numbers (BTN) is a text every CrossFit coach should have. As a coach, the essence of what you do is teach movement. BTN outlines guiding principles of how to view and develop movement on the macro level. It then provides a concrete method to teach exercises through a series of idealized poses to athletes, fix movement errors and make your gym move better. This method works in a 1:1 setting or a class of 20. In a complex group setting with many ability levels, it allows you to coach day 1 athletes and 5 year PR'N veterans together, maintaining cohesiveness. This isn't another book outlining points of performance, it is a book about coaching CrossFit.

Sean's Movement Hierarchy allows everybody in the gym to get on the same page, coaches and athletes. Our On-Ramp Program is based off its progressions, the book gives me a central text for new coaches to study (instead of teaching it repeatedly). New day 1 athletes are exposed to the same drills and cues they will encounter in class, giving them consistency and repetition. Sean's Movement Hierarchy allows coaches to scale workouts consistently, based on the client's ability level, instead of just reducing the weight. You will find the best scale for the overhead squat, is not a light crappy overhead squat with PVC. For athletes, the hierarchy clearly outlines how to progress, answering the question how do I get from where I am to where I want to go. Athletes that make progress and remain uninjured, are long term clients.

Required Reading for the CrossFit Coach

By The Numbers is a long overdue in the CrossFit community. Sean has compiled teaching methods and progressions and placed them into one place. Many veteran coaches have often discussed the need for such a book as this. This is the teaching operations manual for the affiliate. The book should be required reading for anyone who wants to be a CrossFit coach. Quality of coaching has been a large bogey man for the 11+ years I have been coaching CrossFit. One of the main reasons quality teaching methods have not been codified. Quality is often referenced as an amorphous concepts without definition. Here is a definition. Many of the progressions and concepts used in By The Numbers are what I have used to develop my athletes and teams who have qualified for the CrossFit Games. (40+ athletes and six teams)

By The Numbers is an indispensable tool to develop coaches.

An absolute must read for anyone who coaches CrossFit!

By the Numbers (BTN) is an essential text for all those who coach CrossFit and also for athletes who want to get better at doing CrossFit. Being able to take someone who has never set foot in a gym before and effectively teach them how to move safely and effectively is a skill that is not developed overnight. Anyone can yell encouragement at their athletes and call themselves a "coach", but in the end being able to communicate clearly and get a new athlete moving in the correct manner takes skill. BTN provides a method that is repeatable and just works. No matter whether the class consists of 20 people or just 1, the methods shown in BTN work. If you are considering becoming a CrossFit coach then this book is the first thing you should reach for. Your level 1 cert is just the beginning and you need to learn repeatable, consistent ways of teaching movement. If you are already a CrossFit coach then this book is an absolute must for your professional library and you will no doubt reach for it again and again.

"The Age of Voltaire," by Will and Ariel Durant, covers a period of approximately 40 years (1715 to 1756). Much of the volume is devoted to the cultural and intellectual scene. Along with Voltaire and other French thinkers, influential thinkers in other countries (such as the deists in England) are covered as well. The Durants also discuss the graphic arts and the music of this period.

The geopolitical scene during this time is also covered in detail. The reigns of George I and II of England are covered, as well as James III and Charles III, who were pretenders to the British throne. The book also discusses the reign of Louis XV in France and the rise of the Hohenzollern family in Brandenburg-Prussia.

This easy-to-read volume provides a great overview of an important period in European history.

About the Author

Dawn P. Flanagan, PhD, is Professor of Psychology and Director of the School Psychology Training Programs at St. John’s University in Queens, New York. She is also Assistant Clinical Professor at the Yale Child Study Center. Dr. Flanagan serves as an expert witness, learning disability consultant, and psychological test and measurement consultant and trainer, and has published widely on cognitive assessment, specific learning disabilities, and psychometric theories of the structure of cognitive abilities.  Patti L. Harrison, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Educational Studies in Psychology, Research Methodology, and Counseling at the University of Alabama. She has conducted research on intelligence, adaptive behavior, and preschool assessment. Dr. Harrison has published and presented on assessment topics in school psychology, clinical psychology, and special education venues. She is a past editor of School Psychology Review.

Wealth of information, in need of an update

This book is a hard read but it is great information all put together in one place. My only issue is that at this point it is very dated. Got this for a class and never used it because the information for many of the assesments has changed.

This book is a hard read. Everything in it is difficult to understand. I needed it for a MA level course. I passed the course thank goodness, but if it wouldn't have been for google and a dictionary it may have been tough. The book came in great condition however and will order from this company again.

John W. (Jack) Miller is President of Central Connecticut State University, USA. His work has been funded by state, federal, and private agencies, including the Department of Defense, the Department of Education, Bell South Foundation, and the Foundation for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. He conducts a widely disseminated annual study of America’s Most Literate Cities.

Michael C. McKenna is Thomas G. Jewell Professor of Reading at the University of Virginia, USA. His research has been sponsored by the National Reading Research Center (NRRC) and the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement (CIERA). He is the co-winner of the Edward Fry Book Award and the American Library Association’s Award for Outstanding Academic Books.

A Must Read if You're Interested in Literacy

What I liked about this book is that for all its measures and acronyms, it is largely conversational.

The authors realize from the start that they will have to convince us to care about World Literacy and what it might mean.

I must also divulge I am a literacy professor and I teach a course at my university called Global Citizens and my particular theme/emphasis is World Literacy. So, this topic is of interest to me and my job is to make it interesting to my students. I read this with a critical eye because these authors have to make this book interesting to me.

The first chapter focuses on placing literacy in an historical context. What is the value of literacy to a culture or society? The second chapter is in framing the problem of literacy and then establishing its cultural significance. Basically, the authors have to tell us how we can tell which culture or country is more literate than others. To do this the authors define literacy as engaging with printed words or writing. I wish they’d go a bit further in terms of what we do with the texts that we produce or are produced for us to read.

PIRLS, PISA, AILS are the ways (and there are more) that literacy is measured and how readers and nations are held accountable. The authors do a good job explaining how all these work and how all these are used. Of course the upshot of all these are rankings. The authors explain the rankings and give us the grains of salt with which to take the rankings.

I particularly liked the chapter on elementary schooling. This is my daily battleground so I was keen to see how they presented this and both historically and currently the authors are accurate. The authors choose several countries and explain how these approach elementary schooling. Surprisingly they are more alike than they are different. I found the authors are up to date and prescient.

The authors next examine the middle and secondary schooling or the “it’s too late by now to have a real influence” approach. And largely the authors are correct in that middle and secondary content teachers are far more worried about their content than their poorer students comprehending the content. Test scores dive when kids get to middle school and although there are many speculated reasons for this, no one seems able to overcome this phenomena.

The authors next go back to their narrative and this narrative is about how literate cultures are supported by libraries, newspapers, and bookstores. It’s an interesting chapter to read about what libraries, newspapers and bookstores were like in the past and what they are like now. The authors primarily stay within the context of the United States or United Kingdom. I would like to have seen some other cultures included. Still, they speculate on what all these will be like in the future. I immediately thought of seeing the card catalog of our university library wheeled out some twenty years ago to be discarded on a trash heap. I also speculated on how I obtain my news and books now. My subscriptions are a blend of print and online and I seem not to notice.

Next the authors look at indexes that tell us how much people read for work and pleasure and how these numbers are declining or are unchanged. Then it’s on to economic status and the world order and the future of the knowledge based economy. I’ve always found it interesting that the leading countries in term of PISA results and so on don’t seem to have much change in their GDP, stock exchanges and development. Then, there is the US who outpaces everyone when it comes to yearly patents applied for. You could put most countries applications together (exception China) and still not come close to the number applied for by the US. In spite of rigid schooling, common standards, inflexible testing and so forth, somewhere along the line kids still learn to think outside the box.

It is also clear that the largest companies today are very much technology oriented. I am reminded of Pittsburgh where massive closings of steel mills necessitated a need to reinvent itself as a city and did so by becoming technology driven. Pittsburgh invested in technology (of course, they had a leg up with Carnegie Mellon in town).

I found the book interesting throughout and commend the authors for telling world literacy as a story as opposed to overwhelming us with statistics and scores. Of course, the scores and statistics are in there and many people will want the book for these, but the strength of the book is in its discussion of these.
