The Talisman: A Novel, by Stephen King, Peter Straub

A new hardcover edition of the iconic, “extraordinary” (The Washington Post) collaboration between bestselling authors Stephen King and Peter Straub—an epic thriller about a young boy’s quest to save his mother’s life.

Jack Sawyer, twelve years old, is about to begin a most fantastic journey, an exalting, terrifying quest for the mystical Talisman—the only thing that can save Jack’s dying mother. But to reach his goal, Jack must make his way not only across the breadth of the United States but also through the wondrous and menacing parallel world of the Territories.

In the Territories, Jack finds another realm, where the air is so sweet and clear a man can smell a radish being pulled from the ground a mile away—and a life can be snuffed out instantly in the continuing struggle between good and evil. Here Jack discovers “Twinners,” reflections of the people he knows on earth—most notably Queen Laura, the Twinner of Jack’s own imperiled mother. As Jack “flips” between worlds, making his way westward toward the redemptive Talisman, a sequence of heart-stopping encounters challenges him at every step.

An unforgettable epic of adventure and resounding triumph, The Talisman is one of the most influential and highly praised works of fantasy ever written.

“Rare and dazzling…A journey to rival the greatest adventure stories ever told.”—New York Daily News

“Extraordinary…makes your hair stand on end.”—Washington Post

From the Inside Flap
On a brisk autumn day, a thirteen-year-old boy stands on the shores of the gray Atlantic, near a silent amusement park and a fading ocean resort called the Alhambra. The past has driven Jack Sawyer here: his father is gone, his mother is dying, and the world no longer makes sense. But for Jack everything is about to change. For he has been chosen to make a journey back across America–and into another realm.

One of the most influential and heralded works of fantasy ever written, The Talisman is an extraordinary novel of loyalty, awakening, terror, and mystery. Jack Sawyer, on a desperate quest to save his mother's life, must search for a prize across an epic landscape of innocents and monsters, of incredible dangers and even more incredible truths. The prize is essential, but the journey means even more. Let the quest
begin. . . .

Good collaboration
By Michele Eggen
Best-selling authors Stephen King and Peter Straub proved themselves a dynamic duo when they collaborated and conceived "The Talisman."
Fantasy and reality collide in this whirlwind tale as "The Talisman" chronicles the journey of a young boy attempting to save his dying mother. After meeting an eccentric old man in an amusement park, Jack Sawyer becomes aware of an alien realm called the Territories. Jack must trek across America, facing the evil creatures of the Territories and of this world, to retrieve a valuable prize that can save his mother's life.
The book, while very enthralling, can crawl at points and some sequences feel as if they don't relate to the plot, which is distracting to the reader.
The two authors each have a noticeably distinct style, making it obvious when one author stops writing and the other starts. Any avid King fan can recognize his trademark style. Straub has the amazing ability to define scenes down to the finest detail.
The novel is well-devised with the effort of both authors and very pleasant to read. The vivid descriptions make the unforgettable characters come alive. Scenes become so astonishingly real that it's more like watching a movie than reading a book.
With great descriptions, interesting characters and two great authors holding the reins, "The Talisman" is a success.

Simply Brilliant
By pheonix419
J.R.R. Tolkien once said, "Write of Earth, but not Earth," That is exactly what King has created for the reader. I originally wasn't going to write a review, but after reading many of the others i felt that i should at least give my opinion even if it isn't heeded. To begin with, Jack Sawyer begins on his quest to save his mother's life. I have read the book twice, fearing Morgan Sloat, hating Osmond, crying for Wolf, and losing control of the hinge in my jaw for Jack's final victory with the Talisman. And both times, it has been one of the best books I have ever read. Some say King focuses too much on detail, but it is that detail that makes him great, that makes every action of every character sing with joy and cringe in agony. Some have also said that the ending was "obvious" and "lavish". My response to that would be that all stories that portray good and evil and human nature caught between the two have obvious endings. Good always wins, and if you are waiting for evil to triumph in one of King's novels then maybe you had better find another author to read. The book, in fact, is a bit lengthy, but with the imagery and breadth of emotion and toil, it suits its purpose just fine for me. Grade: A+

Another of my favorite books
By Mrs. Roni Hermony
Together with It, The Stand and Weaveworld (Clive Barker) this has always been at the top of the list. I read this book over 15 years ago when it came out and since then I have read it at least eight more times. It is fantasy you can identfy with, the characters are so well drawn. I recommend it to "children of all ages", adults to, from 16 to 100 if they so wish, fantasy lovers and anyone who wants a really compelling read. I was thrilled to see the two authors have gotten together to do it again because I always wanted to know what happened when the young hero grew up. Enjoy.

Amazon.com Review
When 11-year-old Marty Preston chances upon a mistreated beagle pup in his hometown of Friendly, West Virginia, he is not prepared for the ethical questions he has to face. Should he return the dog to its owner, only to have the animal abused again? Should he tell his parents? Should he steal food to help the poor creature? Marty's efforts to cope with these questions provides the moral backbone for this story, which is presented in a language and manner that will be understood by third- and fourth-grade readers. The heart and beauty of this 1992 Newbery Medal winner lies in lessons children will take away with them.

From Publishers Weekly
In the tradition of Sounder and Where the Red Fern Grows comes this boy-and-his-dog story set in rural West Virginia. When he finds a mistreated beagle pup, 11-year-old Marty knows that the animal should be returned to its rightful owner. But he also realizes that the dog will only be further abused. So he doesn't tell his parents about his discovery, sneaks food for the dog and gets himself into a moral dilemma in trying to do the right thing. Without breaking new ground, Marty's tale is well told, with a strong emphasis on family and religious values. This heartwarming novel should win new fans for the popular Naylor. Ages 8-12.
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-- Marty Preston, 11, is a country boy who learns that things are often not what they seem, and that adults are not always "fair" in their dealings with other people. Marty finds a stray dog that seems to be abused and is determined to keep it at all costs. Because his family is very poor, without money to feed another mouth, his parents don't want any pets. Subsequently, there is a lot of conflict over the animal within the family and between Marty and Judd Travers, the dog's owner. Honesty and personal relations are both mixed into the story. Naylor has again written a warm, appealing book. However, readers may have difficulty understanding some of the first-person narration as it is written in rural West Virginian dialect. Marty's father is a postman--usually one of the better paying positions in rural areas--yet the family is extremely poor. There seems to be an inconsistency here. This title is not up to Naylor's usual high quality. --Kenneth E. Kowen, Atascocita Middle School Library, Humble, TX

This story won the Newbery for a very good reason
By Gabe
"Shiloh" is an incredible story, and a worthy recipient of the Newbery Award. Much of the genius of "Shiloh" can be found in its simplicity. At its core, this is a tale about love, loyalty, and family. It is perhaps even more relevant today than when it was published, for the financial struggles of the protagonist's family are something that many families are currently dealing with in these difficult times of economic hardship. In the face of these challenges, our characters (and the readers following them) come to understand the necessity of supporting your family, and the values of taking responsibility for the life of another living being (and the empathy that such a thing instills).

I strongly recommend "Shiloh" for children. It's a great book, and relatively short, as well, which should make it more accessible for reluctant readers. Those who have a fondness for dogs will be even more inclined to enjoy it. As far as how adults will perceive it, those who appreciate children's literature will like it, for the author writes in an engaging voice, entertaining voice.

They loved this book and the story of Shiloh
By Casey
I read this with my 2 boys who are 11 and 9. They loved this book and the story of Shiloh. Once we would start reading at night, they didn't want to stop. They are usually pretty egger to get reading time over with, so that tells you something about this story.

Boys will love this one!
By Charles Fifield
My son loved it! My son really appreciated and identified with the story since he also has a pet dog that he loves and cares for. I really appreciated the value of the lesson in the humane treatment of animals. Also, I love the moral lessons of this book, especially when those moral lesson are shown to be supreme over man's laws. In the end, the main characters get things straightened out between them and there is peace, which is also exceedingly valuable.

Good for non-beginners
By Engineer47
Unfortunaltely "Hands-On Guide" is a misleading description; many examples should have been further detailed. You litterally need a magnifying glass to read many of the Blocks inside the Figures. Too superficial on Media but good on Sensors. This book is good for non-beginners. If you are a beginner, start with App Inventor 2 by David Wolber.

A great second look at App Inventor
By Hal Abelson
Walter and Sherman have done a tremendous service to mobile computing learners by producing this intermediate level book. If you've already gotten a taste of App Inventor and built a couple of simple projects, then this is the way to cement your learning and take it to the next steps. It's full of good examples, but more than that, it describes what it's really like to build with App Inventor, with helpful advice about dealing with errors, saving projects, even publishing in app marketplaces. And it relates all of this to underlying computing concepts like variables, events and databases. Great for the student who wants a second look and indispensable for teachers.

Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team, by George Jonas

Vengeance is a true story that reads like a novel. It is the account of five ordinary Israelis, selected to vanish into "the cold" of espionage secrecy -- their mission to hunt down and kill the PLO terrorists responsible for the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972.

This is the account of that secret mission, as related by the leader of the group -- the first Mossad agent to come out of "deep cover" and tell the story of a heroic endeavor that was shrouded in silence and speculation for years. He reveals the long and dangerous operation whose success was bought at a terrible cost to the idealistic volunteer agents themselves.

"Avner" was the leader of that team, handpicked by Golda Meir to avenge the monstrous crime of Munich. He and his young companions, cut off from any direct contact with Israel, set out systematically to find and kill the central figures of the PLO's Munich operation, tracking them down wherever they lived.

The mechanics, the horror, the day-by-day suspense of what they did surpass by far anything John le Carr or Robert Ludlum could imagine, as they themselves were tracked in turn (and some killed) by PLO assassins, changing identities constantly, moving from country to country, devoting their young lives to the brutal task of vengeance.

Vengeance is a profoundly human document, a real-life espionage classic that plunges the reader into the shadow world of terrorism and political murder. But it goes far beyond that, to explore firsthand the feelings of disgust and doubt that gradually came to torment each member of the Israeli team, and that in the end inexorably changed their view of the mission -- and themselves.

Vengeance opens a window onto a secret world, a book that at the same time inspires and horrifies. For its subject is an act of revenge that goes to the very heart of the ancient biblical questions of good and evil.

Author is honest
By M. A. Devlin
I really enjoyed this book. It was well paced throughout. After reading quite a few "non-fiction" spy books, to me Vengeance has the ring of truth to it, reminding me more of the Falcon and the Snowman than Vise's The Bureau and the Mole.

I had the luxury of reading Vengeance when it first came out, and reread it after viewing the movie Munich, of which this book was the primary source.

Our "hero" Anver, was a Mossad agent who was asked to leave the agency by Golda Meir, the Prime Minister of Israel, to lead a team of men. This team was to attempt to take the lives of 11 men who were responsible for the Black September terrorist group's act of killing Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics.

The book follows the freelance team during their strong, early times, and their weak moments, both personal and professional. We meet not only the team, but also their sources, who are also personalized.

Although the author had to rely on a single source for some sections of the book, he is honest about this. When there are questions about his interpretation, he explains the different theories in the footnotes.

I bumped my review from 4 stars to 5 because of the "Notes on a Controversy" and footnotes that follow the main text in this volume. Questions raised about the author's perspective and sources are answered well in these two sections. I found Jonas to be honest about relying on his source. He also debates articles that attacked his book with his perspective without name calling.

Fascinating and well-written...
By David W. Nicholas
This is one of those books that leaves you wondering, on several levels, about its contents. I don't think this is bad: actually, since it gets you thinking about the issues involved, I think it's a good thing. Vengeance purports to recount the efforts of a group of Israelis sent by the Mossad to Europe to kill various PLO figures who had aided, supported, planned, or otherwise enabled the 1972 Munich massacre of the Israeli Olympic team. The whole book apparently, at the time, raised a considerable controversy: many of the events in the story are uncorroborated, and of course this would lead to some readers being skeptical.

On the other hand, this book represents the sort of thing you'd expect would happen. We know the Israelis at least tried such operations: the killing of a Morrocan waiter in Lillehammer Norway was certainly an attempt to kill one of the PLO's top guys, and some of the supporting Mossad operatives were caught, tried, convicted, and sentenced to jail for their part in the plot. The whole thing sounds believable, down to the team having specialists for various aspects of operations in Europe, to their using small pistols because of the lack of loud noise (.22s with reduced powder for even less noise), the bombs that don't work exactly as planned, and the lack of exact information as to who was behind the retaliation once it began.

This book reads as a spy novel, and perhaps should be read at least partially as if it is one. After all, does anyone think that the writings of John Le Carre are completely fictional. He was, for a short time anyway, in the intelligence community, as were Graham Greene and Frederick Forsyth. You have to think that those authors include things from their own experience, and from the experiences of acquaintances, in their writings. This book, in an odd way, is similar. The author apparently writes the story with (as far as he knows) all of the main action recounted accurately, but he revised personal characteristics in order to conceal identities. As a result, the book is a history with novelistic elements, as opposed to a novel with historical elements.

I found the main premise of the book to be believable, however. While there's some doubt that Israel killed off as many people as this book says they did, in the fashion recounted here, the whole thing sounds plausible to me. The idea that they would have initial success and ultimately unravel is completely believable, and the premise that there were other teams, who eventually assasinated other PLO functionaries, is completely believeable. The anecdotes involving the main character negotiating with his bosses in a somewhat adversarial relationship sounds very convincing, while at the same time not being exactly what you'd expect in a professional intelligence agency. While unconfirmed, the whole story sounds credible, and that may be the best argument that it happened: at this point corroboration seems less likely, though I suppose that the Israelis could have a change of heart and come out and admit that what is recounted in the book actually happened. The end of the book makes it clear this is unlikely, though.

All in all, a good book, interesting, intelligently written, and confronting one of the great dillemmas of our time: what do you do when terrorists target innocent civilians and kill them? The author quotes Ghandhi as saying that an eye for an eye leads to a world of blind people. One might respond that no eye for an eye leads to a world of righteous blind people, and sighted victimizers. Very very interesting book.

Compelling and tragic
By P. Willson
Glad it's being re-printed. I read the hard-cover original book about 7-8 months ago, and it was an enthralling, yet disturbing and ultimately very sad story -- a book I didn't want to put down. Being re-released due to Spielberg's movie "Munich" - try to read the book first.

While presenting the intrigue and excitement of a good espionage thriller, it simultaneously chronicles the growing personal and ethical conflicts of the young Israeli Mossad agent chosen to lead a Kidon squad sent to hunt down and assassinate the Black September terrorist masterminds behind the 1972 Munich Olympics murders of 11 Israeli athletes.

In hindsight, and by comparison with other, later semi-official accounts, there are some careful but obvious fabrications to protect the way Mossad actually operated in Europe - but the bulk of the story appears to be pretty accurate, and you will easily recognize the real episodes that emerged in fictionalized form in novels by Daniel Silva, Steven Hartov, and others.

There is an abstractness and detached matter-of-factness about "Vengeance" that I suspect reflects the lead character's subsequent emotional dissociation - but that aloof coolness permeates the whole enterprise. The assassin 'officially' can not be an agent of Israel or Mossad and thus is immediately isolated from his support system and from any idealistic moral compass that persuaded him to take the job. We watch his dawning cynicism, grief, and guilt - but not remorse - as he realizes how equally expendable he is to his handlers, and in the end, he and his team are as hunted as their targets had been.

The book sticks with you afterwards -- I have found myself wondering how the lead character in this story has fared over the years - I hope he found some degree of safety and peace.

The Computer and the Brain (The Silliman Memorial Lectures Series), by John von Neumann

In this classic work, one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century explores the analogies between computing machines and the living human brain. John von Neumann, whose many contributions to science, mathematics, and engineering include the basic organizational framework at the heart of today's computers, concludes that the brain operates both digitally and analogically, but also has its own peculiar statistical language.

In his foreword to this new edition, Ray Kurzweil, a futurist famous in part for his own reflections on the relationship between technology and intelligence, places von Neumann’s work in a historical context and shows how it remains relevant today.

Deserves More Than 5 Stars
By Tuck Newport
John von Neumann was the principal architect (in 1945) of the design from which all subsequent electronic computers trace their lineage. As he was dying of bone cancer, this giant of 20th Century mathematics and physics wrote the last of his 150 research papers, "The Computer and the Brain".

In 80 pages, von Neumann describes the key components and processes of computers and of brains and then analyzes their similarities and differences. Developments in both computer science and neuroscience during the intervening six decades have corroborated his overall analysis. Von Neumann had a better grasp in 1956 than proponents of AI have today of what differentiates artificial intelligence (computers) from biological intelligence (brains). In the last section of "The Computer and the Brain", von Neumann goes to considerable lengths to explain exactly how computers differ from brains:

"It should also be noted that the message-system used in the nervous system, as described in the above, is of an essentially statistical character. In other words, what matters are not the precise positions of definite markers, digits, but the statistical characteristics of their occurrence, i.e., frequencies of periodic or nearly periodic pulse-trains, etc.

"Thus the nervous system appears to be using a radically different system of notation from the ones we are familiar with in ordinary arithmetic and mathematics. Instead of the precise systems of markers where the position--and presence or absence--of every marker counts decisively in determining the meaning of the message, we have here a system of notations in which the meaning is conveyed by the statistical properties of the message. We have seen how this leads to a lower level of arithmetical precision but to a higher level of logical reliability: a deterioration in arithmetics has been traded for an improvement in logics."

Or, to quote von Neumann again farther down the same page, "The Language of the Brain is Not the Language of Mathematics".

Try to imagine transistor logic gates, arithmetic logic units, integrated circuits, multi-core microprocessors, neuromorphic chips, neural networks, massively parallel systems, software algorithms, etc.--all without math. Good luck.

Something of a historical curiosity
By Phred
Perhaps more so than Alan Turing, (If we accept the intro by Kirtzweil, a man with serious credentials), John von Neuman was one of the most important figures in developing the basic architecture of the modern digital computer. The two did work together, but von Neuman was the senior and I propose had a better grasp of the juncture of math and machine.
The Computer and the Brain is the last published work by von Neuman and was an attempt to bring together what was known about the machine qualities of the brain and what the machines of 1957 might one day be able to accomplish.
As such almost everything is dated and new discoveries in neuroscience more so than in computers place limits on the absolute value of his comments.

That said, there was a head line in recent science news that there is a prototype computer in testing that combines both digital and large scale parallel computing in the manner von Neuman suggests as the model for how the brain may work.

The Computer and the Brain is the printed from of a lecture. He was too ill (mortally) for the series he was offered to conduct. So great was the respect for the man that he was allowed to present only these papers, sufficient for one lecture and about 3 hours reading. I do not think he read the paper; he had just the strength to write it.

Besides having been a vitally important mathematician, he was active in the cause of scientific ethics and as the man who drafted the letter, signed by Einstein credited with America committing to atomic research he is therefore a originator of the atomic age. He was a man of great thought and influence.
Reading this book is a chance to listen to a great mind. I make no claim to have understood all of it. I suspect that no one should read it in an effort to be at the leading edge of math, computers or neurology. It is a hard, but worth it read, and a glass into our recent history.

Slightly Ahead of his Time
By John P. Kyle
Like Panasonic, Neumann was slightly ahead of his time.
I'm currently reading Neumann's biography by Macrea. In addition to his understanding of mathematics, Neumann had the ability to extrapolate evolving seemingly unrelated sciences with astonishing accuracy.
People interested in these topics should also have interest in reading The Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasty and the Power of Mental Force by Jeffrey Schwartz (not a new book).

Pretty book, but if you are looking for depth you will be disappointed.
By Concerned Consumer
I have a love/hate relationship with this book. Batman is the only hero I can afford to follow at this time, so I'm very selective in my purchases. As such, although I like the book and actually do recommend it, I'm not sure yet if I really think I got my money's worth.

PROS: If you are a comic collector and need just one book on Batman's history, then this is the book to get because it is very attractive and the most up-to-date (to early 2014). Every 2 pages covers one year in Batman's history (1939-early 2014), depicting not only events from Detective Comics and Batman Comics, but other related issues as well, such as World's Finest, JLA, and any other title with an important connection Batman's history. It's full of colorful pictures and past book covers throughout, and can give you some leads on past issues you might want to collect. It's also a great coffee table book if want to stimulate conversation with fellow comic book readers.

CONS: It is only about the comic history of Batman. TV and film is barely covered, so it's not a completely told history of Batman in popular culture. It's an extremely concise guide to key events in the comic book history of Batman in a VERY BRIEF but unfulfilling way. If you desire depth and want to know details of the Batman universe and creative history (like why certain artists/writers are important), then this is not the book you want. Why? Imagine telling the first 75 years of Batman in a Powerpoint presentation. That is this book. It's a bit of a tease, almost like smelling a tasty dessert but not getting a satisfying bite of it. For example, you might get a sentence saying that So-and-So began writing Batman with issue # whatever, but the authors fail to tell you why that person is good or bad or how they relate to Batman's history. Moreover, a lot of minor characters are mentioned in a way that exaggerates their importance, while (in my opinion) more important events/storylines are ignored. If you are hardcore and want more than a few bullet points, look elsewhere. This will leave you disappointed.

For hardcore Batman fans I recommend this book along with Essential Batman Encyclopedia (current thru 2008), and the Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes: Batman - Vol 1 (current thru early 1970s). The latter is the most detailed account of characters, locations, tech, etc (along with issue dates & numbers) ever written, and despite being 40 years out of date is still one of the best collecting resources out there. If you buy all three you then you have the best sources for Batman comic collecting through late 2014.

~What a HIStory this is.....WOW.~
By ~K.I.S.S`E.S.S~don't lie~
Bat Fans, you most definitely HAVE to add this one to your collection, or like myself, buy it so you can start one. I own an abundance of the comics, but after reading this, I realized I am not as schooled on Batman as I thought. Not that I know it all, but considering just how much information is presented here, it is both awesome while leaving you awestruck. From 1939 to 2014, the information is quite detailed and it is fascinating to understand how, from small beginnings as a comic strip originally entitled Bat-Man, the removal of the hyphen would signal a change that Batman would never be the same. This book is big, really big, and gives us something I did not expect. Here on Amazon, the images shown to be the front and back of the book actually are not images for the book, rather the large case that holds the book. The two combined bring a weight a little over 6 pounds, so know you will not get through this read quickly, and neither should you want to do so. The artwork of Jason Fabok is stellar, as always, and the exclusive prints are illustrated by him, as well. The first print is the actual cover to the book, and the second shows the case images as a solid piece, with 4 snapshots of a young Bruce Wayne after his parents were killed, Joker, Batman & Catwoman, and Apokolips battling Batman. Perhaps the only gripe about this visual history is the size of the font when reading the caption of the comic books listed about Batman's history. Maybe making the book a half inch taller would have benefited those of us may not wear glasses, but can struggle at times with fonts this size. The binding is tight, and gives just enough to allow for page turning that should not weaken the spine of the book. 75 years, that's a lot to cover on any topic, but if you are reading this, then you have surely determined Batman is well worth it. I encourage you to stop waiting & start paying. 5 stars. No diggity, no doubt.

A must have for anyone who has read a batman comic

This is the best batman encyclopedia ever! As a huge fan of batman my whole life I've never seen a book with so much information! The only way a book could be any more in depth would be if they literally went issue by issue.
