Still the Best Primer on "Near Death Experiences"

First published in the late 1970s, I believe this book is still the best introduction to the phenomenon known as the "Near Death Experience" (NDE). Whether you're a believer, skeptic, agnostic, atheist, Christian, Buddhist, Jew, Wicca--makes no difference, since the experience has been documented to happen to anyone regardless of their cultural influences or upbringing. If you have heard the phrase "near death experience" but have only a vague notion of what this entails, I urge you to pick up this book and read it--if you keep an open mind, it could change your life :)

Simply put, the NDE may give us a preview of what happens to humans when we die. I first read this book around 1985 and found it both fascinating and enlightening. It is very straightforward and even-handed in it's reporting--without religious overtones from the author, although he does draw correlations between NDE's and their possible appearance in texts such as the Tibetan Book of the Dead, the Bible & Greek philosophy. At the time of publication, Dr. Moody had only investigated about 150 cases total--since then, as the technology to resuscitate patients has improved, thousands more have experienced the NDE. The book also created an open dialogue about NDE's and many more who had kept the experience secret (for fear of being ridiculed) have come forward with their story.

The Light Beyond by Raymond Moody -- in my opinion, the best of his follow-up books on the subject.
On Life After Death by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, M.D. -- One of the pioneers of NDE research & best known for defining "The 5 Stages of Grief & Dying." She & Moody were both studying NDE's at the same time without being aware of each other's research.
The Tunnel and The Light by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, M.D. - Another collection of her writings & lectures on the subject of NDE's.

Although there are many more books on the subject (some by researchers, others by those who experienced an NDE firsthand) I always recommend these first as they are well-researched and, in my opinion, present the subject with the least amount of bias.

Makes you think

This book isn't proof of the after life. And I don't think that was Raymond Moody's intent was to offer irrefutable evidence of life after life, but for anyone who wants to hear stories from people who've had interesting experiences near death, they're told well in this book. As depressing as a book about death might seem, this book left me feeling positive and reignited my curiosity about the nature of our lives here. Maybe there is a life after life...

But I found it strange that everyone's personal experience was so pleasant. Seems like Raymond Moody is just telling us what we want to hear. 'Now now there's no need to worry.. Death isn't so bad" is almost what it feels like. I know I've heard about death experiences that weren't so pleasant. Why did Raymond Moody exclude the more negative experience?

Non the less, still a heartwarming and interesting book to read.

A must read if you've recently lost someone!

This book helped me heal after my mothers death December 1st. I was a wreck with grief for 2 1/2 months. I had that 1% doubt in my mind that maybe, just maybe, there wasn't a Heaven after all. I started drinking (every day)! I was a mess!
I read this in two days, and was "healed"! I felt so much better after reading it, that I gave it to someone else to read who was also grieving her fathers death.

Allen is a professional writer and a former editor of Dog Fancy magazine. She has written widely on pets and pet care; her articles have appeared in such publications as Cats, The AKC Gazette, ASPCA’s Animal Watch, The World of Professional Pet-Sitting, Whole Cats Journal, Dogs Today, and many others. Best pet-loss book I've read

This is the best of the pet-loss/grief books I've read. We recently lost our faithful dog at age 9--far too soon. This book says whats in my heart. It feels like I wrote it, so much of it rang true. I highly recommend it to anyone who is grieving and especially if they have no or too little support around them. No one can understand or relate unless they too have lost a pet who was a family member. This author can take the place of friends or family who don't get it. She discusses all the stages of grief and how they specifically relate to animals, ie: feeling guilty for making the decision to euthanize. So many people will get another pet immediately, but I always feel angry at the mere idea of some other animal sleeping in my pet's place, or wanting my affections. She addresses this issue too, so I knew my feelings weren't abnormal. I'm sure this will help anyone in a pet loss situation.

In 2 years i lost my 19 year old kitty and 18 year old kitty. I had looked for a long time for a book that would give me comfort and explain what i was feeling. Pets are members of the family and when they pass it can be a very hard thing to deal with. This book has helped me and i hope it help why ever gets it.

This is a REVISED REVIEW; my initial one was unfair to the Author. When I first bought this book, I had wanted it to perform a "miracle" for me and wipe-out the pain of losing my cat. I expected more than ANY book could deliver. On re-consideration, I see that this book could be very valuable to persons who need help and understanding as they mourn. It has sensitive and wise advice in negotiating the grieving process. Certainly, there is a measure of comfort in knowing that others have experienced the same sense of loss, and that in time, there can be recovery. This book can help you along.

Hm... Am I missing something? This book doesn't tell you anything you already know from common sense. Dangle things in front of the baby, make noises, hold them and lift them, give them stimulating toys, etc. Returning mine.

Simple but meaningful ideas

I like that this explains why each activity, as simple as it may be, benefits you and your baby. There are a variety of activities such as "diaper distractions", active play, etc. The activities are simple but I like that most of them can be done with household items or no props at all. Some examples are swaying your newborn and singing to him, tickling your baby with a pom pom or feather, making funny faces at your baby. If you think these are obvious then I wouldn't recommend this book for you, but if you are interested in baby development and looking for easy, simple ideas, then you will probably like this book.

Great book for a first time parent

This book is jam packed with great ideas of activities to do with baby. It is full of pictures that show the activities so if you want to skim over the book without reading very much you can do that too (I find this handy when I am holding a squirming baby.) This book also has clap along songs and nursery rhymes to sing with baby. I couldn't be happier. I just wish I'd discovered it sooner.
