About the Author
Professor Richard W. Tresch earned a bachelor's degree from Williams College in 1965 and a doctorate in economics in 1973 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a teaching assistant prior to his arrival at Boston College. He joined the Boston College faculty in 1969 and throughout his 43-year career has served as Chairman of the Department of Economics, Director of Graduate Studies, and Director of Undergraduate Studies.

In 1996, chosen as Massachusetts Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He was one of 585 national entrants in the foundation's US Professors of the Year Program, which salutes outstanding undergraduate instructors; its award is recognized as one of the most prestigious honors bestowed upon professors. "I am quite humbled by the award, and extremely grateful to the Carnegie Foundation," Tresch said. "The greatest honor, however, is to have been nominated by Boston College. There are so many good teachers here and to be chosen to represent them in the program is something I truly value."

A member of the American Economic Association, Tresch served on the board of editors for the American Economic Review, and has contributed to New England Journal of Business and Economics and Public Finance. He is the editor of a four-volume major reference work on public sector economics.
The third edition on his textbook, Public Finance: A Normative Theory publishes in November, 2014.

I do NOT like the story book format of this book. Awful! Should have stuck to their precalculus book style. It was hard to find the math and **cutesy** but not very informative. Waste of money.

Really does make calculus E-Z!

I absolutely love this book. It is written in a story format that follows characters in the land of Camorra and how they use calculus to overcome problems. I find the text easy to read as well as understand the relevance of what is being presented as it always being applied to real world like problems. There are plenty of practice problems at the end of each chapter to test your knowledge and really helps to sharpen your skills. I bought this book for self-study and so far it has been a great asset to my learning of calculus.

Better than previously reviewed - Take it from an English PhD candidate

Contrary to the opinion of the previous review, this book offers an insightful overview of the nuances Stevens' work touches upon. Included in this work is information regarding his own life, his struggle with politics and poetry, a look at the multiple personae he used as his 'voices' when writing, his link to the Romantic poets, his use of the seasons, etc. While some of these essays could be a bit longer (As I would like to see), they are written by some of the top contemporary critics of Stevens and Modern Poetry. If you are at all interested in Stevens, this is not a bad place to begin reading criticism. These essays provide excellent introductions into some of the questions lurking around Stevens' rather opaque poetry.

Good overall introduction to Wallace Stevens

I must agree with the "English PhD candidate" reviewer. The Cambridge Companions are usually solid. Stevens' poetry is complex, and draws on many different fields such as painting and philosophy. The essays in this volume will shed light on how they influenced his poetry. Stevens' poetry also matured over time in very delicate ways. The essay "Stevens' late poetry" in this volume will help readers to appreciate these subtle changes.

However, I must caution that some essays read too much into the poetry. This is not a flaw of this book per se, but rather an unfortunate tendency in contemporary criticism. For example, the essay on how Stevens' view of God has gradually become a kind of "difference" seems to have too much Derrida lurking in the background.

About the Author
Luca Turin was born in 1953 and educated in France and the UK. He holds a PhD in Biophysics from the University of London, and his research touches on olfaction and anesthesia. His book The Secret of Scent describes some of his work on olfaction, on which he also lectured at TED. In 1992 he published, in French, the first book of critical perfume reviews. Later, in collaboration with Tania Sanchez, he wrote the more comprehensive Perfumes: the A-Z Guide and The Little Book of Perfumes. He has won the Prix Jasmin (France) twice and the Jasmine Prize (UK) once, for excellence in writing on perfume. He was a columnist for Swiss magazine NZZ Folio for eleven years and contributes perfume reviews to Style Arabia and WWD.

Delight, broken into bite-sized pieces. I can't remember the last time I wished any given essay I was reading were longer, let alone every one in a collection. Luca's writing is vivid, funny, and teaches me things without making me feel like a dummy for not knowing them already. Yes, half of the book is "about" perfume, but it's more than a collection of reviews or lists of notes. It helps to explain why those of us whose favorite intoxicants have names like "No. 5" and "L'heure Bleu" feel the way we do. All art opens windows onto the entire world, and perfumery is an art. Even if the only scented thing you've ever worn is by Axe, you should read this. (And then stop wearing Axe, for god's sake.)

An exceptional writer, one of my favorites. Turin's strength as a writer is his obvious ability to grasp the world and its complexity, metaphorically.....a most immediate, compelling and powerful form of comprehension. He is genius at translating the realm of boundarylessness, (like perfume and music) into tangible form. This book is pure entertainment and serious mind food. Next I suggest you check out Perfumes: The A-Z Guide by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez, which is "as gripping as any thriller".

A Wonderful resource

This book really is a wonderful resource for physicians interested in a statistical basis for their practice. I had been seeking for a book with hard numbers on the frequency with which symptoms and signs are found. This book really does an outstanding job
