Beginning when she was only thirteen years old, Michelle Jay has understood her passion and love for ASL. As a hearing person in the Deaf community, Michelle was determined to master everything she could about ASL... not just "how to sign" but the very best ways to learn to sign as well!

As the founder of StartASL.com, the leading online resource for ASL and Deaf Culture, Michelle has tremendous insight into this unique community. Pocket Guide ...Get on Kindle - NOT worth paying 8 dollars for this in paperback

This is good info to know, however it is NOT worth paying $8 for the paperback when it's only a dollar on Kindle (e-reader).

This is literally a list of acronyms and some terms used in the deaf culture/community and a very brief description. There are no signs or pictures in this book explaining how to do a sign.

This author's other books are amazing - I have them both on my kindle and in paperback (for different family members) and they've been VERY helpful!!!

Pocket Resource--Great For Some...

This little book is a brief, pocket dictionary of terms (vocabulary) one can encounter in ASL / Deaf-World studies and interactions. This is NOT an ASL language dictionary with signs, images, or translations. This guide contains words and acronyms used in association with Deaf culture, services, education, technology, and discussion.

Examples: ADARA, American Deaf Advocacy and Rehabilitation Association / Cochlear Implant (CI) / GU, Gallaudet University / IEP, Individualized Education Program or Interpreter Education Program / NRID, National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf

This book is best as a travel companion for those folks who may not want to carry around larger books or resources. It can be conveniently poked into a book-bag, backpack, or briefcase without adding any significant bulk or weight. It pretty much has the same information that appears in the Step 5: Learn the Terminology section of Don't Just Sign... Communicate: A Student's Guide to ASL and the Deaf Community...just in a compact format. I like it, but I admit to using it a lot less than the main books in the Start ASL Presents series. I give it four stars instead of five because, for me, there wasn't anything new or needed here when I had the other material. (When I purchased this, I expected something slightly different since I had the larger study books. I had thought it might be necessary since it was suggested as a companion book.) However, I can see that this quick reference pocket guide might be useful for some people who are participating in Deaf-World events, ASL Workshops, Deaf Education seminars, research, classes, presentations, and activities like these. It also would be helpful for people who are reading lengthy, scholarly materials such as Journey Into The Deaf-World by Harlan Lane, Robert Hoffmeister and Ben Bahan.

So I bought the book for my sister because she had to read it for class and I ended up reading it, I loved the book. I will not lie to you. I'm not an emotional person but this book with every poem it got me emotional. It certainly lived up to what the other reviews say.

Tear-jerking and beautiful.

The poetry is absolutely amazing. It's so heart-wrenching and relatable to those suffering from depression. The words just speak so deeply and from the heart, I can't help but hold back tears. One can speak about depression and mental illnesses normally, but putting it to the flow and rhythm of poetry just speaks louder than it normally would and sticks to readers more. I love the simplistic artwork as well.

It's a total gimmick, but it works

This book isn't about 100 bottles. It's more like 100 vignettes about wine. "Phoenicia", "Resin and All That", "Corkscrews", "Screw Caps", "Fraud", and many other topics aren't bottles.

The two page format for every topic is not one I like. I think the subject should define the length, rather forcing the subject to fit the length.

Nonetheless, this book reeled me in. I just wanted to keep reading. It's light, it's fluffy, and it's a gimmick. But it's fun.

Quick paced and informal survey of the history of wine

The author literally skips through the history of wine. Informal, often using slang expressions unknown to Americans it is nevertheless fun and accurate. Each topic is much like a glass of wine, tasty, sharp and fun. Good for students of wine and wine lovers. It was my beach read this week, sorry to see it end!

Let's not feel sorry for Oz Clarke, the prolific wine writer. He was faced with a huge challenge: to write the history of wine. But how? Hugh Johnson gave it a shot a quarter century ago; Jancis Robinson has taken up the cudgel as well. How does one organize such a wide and wild field of knowledge? In this volume, The History of Wine in 100 Bottles (published Tuesday by Sterling Epicure) Clarke bypasses not only long-winded history and geography but grape varieties as well; in their stead, he tells 100 stories, short bursts of wine-related anecdotes.

Nothing wrong with that; after all, that's what I did in my own book Home Grown Seattle. The trouble with the "100 stories" format is that some topics will inevitably seem trivial compared to others. "Wine in legend" merits a thoughtful historical essay, yet ends up with exactly the same space as mini-biographies of Robert Parker.and Michael Broadbent. Bag-in-box wines get an entry; David Lett gets an entry for Oregon pinot noir; Chateau Ste. Michelle and Washington State do, too (though Associated Vintners prof Lloyd Woodbourne is identified as Lloyd Woodhouse).

Still, it's a good, breezy read, bouncing briskly from one decade to the next, one continent to another, taking into account forgotten details (Hitler had a collection of half a million bottles, and he didn't even like wine), and embarrassing moments (Rudy Kurniawan's fraudulent bottles). If this were Clarke's first (or only) book, one might hesitate to recommend it. But for those of us whose shelves are already creaking with the classic titles, this is the sort of reference work you want to keep closer at hand.

I highly recommend "Teaching Natasha" by Savvy Fortier as a late night read. Natasha is an everyday successful business woman who had an erotic side to her that most can relate too *wink wink*. I personally enjoyed reading this short novel. It was my first time indulging in erotica. And now I'm hooked.The sexual tone was perfect. Truly inspiring and a good read!

Excellent stories and very well written. It brought back a lot of memories of my own childhood, which was very similar in some aspects. A truly inspirational book and Michael certainly went through a lot of experiences. Great!
