Caitlin Matthews has written many books on the Celtic world and its traditions, including The Encyclopedia of Celtic Wisdom. The Celtic Book of the Dead and Celtic Wisdom Tarot. Together with her husband John, she runs a busy shamanic practice in Oxford and is co-founder of the Foundations for Inspirational and Oracular Studies which teaches shamanism and traditional oral lore worldwide.

Nice way to learn about the Ogham

This would make a nice gift for a Celtic fan. The one thing that disappointed me was that the sticks are all from the same wood. I was expecting that they would be made from the trees they represent. Other than that, I really like the presentation. The guide book is well researched, as Catlin's writing always is, but as a divination tool I found it rather cumbersome. Since each stick has four different meanings, depending on whether it falls in the North, South, East, or West, it seems a bit more complicated than it needs to be.

Dynamic Innovative Approach to Ogham

First off, let me say that I have incredible respect for the work and writings of Caitlin Matthews. I have followed her line of inquiry into the Celtic visionary tradition over the years and feel that she has done an incredible service to both Celtic and non-Celtic descendants by what she has produced. Her research into Ogam to produce The Celtic Wisdom Sticks is keeping in her prolific strides to produce time-tested, yet relevant means for people to deepen their practice. Her work on the Ogam is very good both via scholarship and translation but, probably even more importantly, via utilizing some of the very visionary states of consciousness employed by our Irish ancestors. The book really is very innovative in its consideration of the Ogam--speaking openly that the sacred markings have a utilitarian purpose, but also a visionary application.
The actual "sticks" in the set The Celtic Wisdom sticks--at least in the ones I received--were not really that great, but I have since realized that, truly, they are merely meant as a guide--and that if your soul takes to the Ogam, and the soul of the Ogam takes to you, that you will eventually make your own set that has the mark of your own energy within them. And, I would recommend doing this. The 'forfedha' letters on the Four Airts, or Four Directional Indicator stave is truly ingenious and adds a remarkable sense of visionary continuity with other visionary practices in the Celtic tradition. The particular indicator stick I received in the set was a little imbalanced--which I think can throw a reading off and is another reason for making your own staves--but I find this innovation, like everything else Caitlin does, to be truly cutting edge, while honoring of the ancient.
Many of the suggested readings are also beautiful, combining the best of intuition with the nature of this lore to guide those who walk in this way with a quality of "the next step," which any working oracle should do. The Oghams, like the Runes and the Yarrow Sticks of the I-Ching, are not a static and lifeless oracle, but a living, breathing being that becomes a co-walker in your life.
To this end, I feel that the book is well worth the purchase, but I would recommend using the actual sticks that one receives in The Celtic Wisdom Sticks as simply a model or guide for creating your own set. Definitely reap the harvest of Caitlin's analepsis, as she puts it, but buy this set primarily for the book.

The sticks....

I have enjoyed much of the Matthews' writings, both when together and on their own, but I'm not so elated with this. I was fortunate enough to pick this up when a book shop was closing down and so got it at a very low price, I'm not so sure I would have been so forgiving if I had to pay full price.
I have read quite a lot on the Ogham, and aside from Robert Graves' White Goddess, this is probably the most inspired and innovative spin on them I have come across, although it is not the most insightful. Now whilst I agree that the Ogham should not be looked upon only as a "tree alphabet", if one has decided to emphasise this approach then there should be a little more about the nature of the tree and how this affects ones interpretation of the individual staves. Just my personal opinion!
That aside, the actual practical side of the book is a geat idea, enough to redeem it at any rate! I particularly admire the work gone into the quatrains, which are far more insightful than many of the traditional word oghams, which have lost much meaning in their translation. These add so much more to the depth of reading one can traditionally get from them, and has revived my flagging use of them.
This book has altered the way I use the ogham quite considerably, but I shan't be using the staves that come with the set, I'll stick to my own (oh the comedy!). Mine came with two that were losing their bark and in a fraying bag. Rustic,or just shoddy? I think the latter. That aside, it is true that making one's own staves is a much better idea. My own set I spent a while over, collecting the wood of each tree and bush to make them with, all in all a much better way of doing it!

As former residents of Jerusalem and now well-acclaimed London restaurateurs, they have compiled a luscious, photographic collection of 120 recipes with origins encompassing various religions, countries, and, occasionally, continents. The history of the city and of foods found there are sprinkled throughout the text, as are visuals not only of recipes but also of the people who inhabit Jerusalem and beyond. Expect discourses on the humble aubergine (eggplant); za’atar, a native herb; hummus wars; and even Georgian cuisine. The book’s leisurely pace picks up with the introduction of dishes, some familiar but many not, that include fattoush, latkes, mejadra, clear chicken soup with knaidlach, pan-fried mackerel with golden beetroot and orange salsa, and helbeh (fenugreek cake). Amazing. Doable. So good.

This cookbook is approachable and the recipes are actually something you will make...and then make again. If you love Middle Eastern cuisine, buy this. I have made the basic Hummus...it takes some time, so be aware that you need 24 hours. It was so good. I agree with the authors that if anything is going to bring the middle east to peace..it's gotta be the hummus. The other thing I made was the Couscous with tomato and onion. Love the flavors, I will make both of these again. The great thing about the recipes are, they aren't so wild that you can't imagine making them. The ingredients are, for the most part, easy to find. The techniques are simple enough for the home cook. Falafel is next on the list.

****Edit****I would just like to say, that one of the reasons, I think, that this is so doable for a Middle Eastern cookbook, is these are the recipes that regular people make. This is what the moms and grandmas make. That's the kind of food I want to make as well, good home cooking.

Top 10 cookbook

I almost never post reviews, but this books is so wonderful, I felt compelled to add to the accolades it's receiving. I am a professional cook, so I buy and cook from a TON of cookbooks. Many I use mainly for inspiration in terms of flavor combinations because the recipes don't actually work so well. Some I use to explore new techniques. This cookbook offers both; the recipes work (I should note I have the UK edition without US conversions)--many of the techniques are new to me and they work well--and the flavors are amazing. And it's a gorgeous cookbook as well.

The first recipes I made from this book were the roasted cauliflower salad with celery, hazelnuts and pomegranate and the sofrito chicken. I figured there was no way the cauliflower salad could be anything but delicious, and it was. But I had my doubts about the chicken--the recipe involved several steps (browning the chicken, seasoning the chicken, steam-roasting the chicken, frying potatoes and garlic and then adding them to the chicken and its juices). I didn't think it would be any better than a simple roast chicken and vegetables (which is hard to improve on when done well). But it was unbelievably delicious! And had a texture and subtlety of flavor I had never tasted before.

It's true that some of these dishes are not week-night fare--as one reviewer mentioned, you can't throw them all on the table in under an hour. But many of them are. A quick read-through of the recipe should let you know which are quicker and which take an hour or more of prep and cooking.

I am adding this cookbook to my top 10 list because a) it's a beautiful, well-written book, b) the recipes work very well when followed to the letter, but there's lots of room for improvisation, c) the flavor and texture combinations are complex, subtle and well-balanced, and d) the dishes are delicious.

Believe the Hype...

I'll keep it short.

If I had only one cookbook to take to my desert island this would be it.

The recipes are consistently among the most delicious, filling and soul nurturing that I've found in any one single book in my kitchen library. The humus recipes alone are worth the price of admission. I realize that such generalized praise is hardly enough to convince most people to consider purchasing this wonderfully inspired book but I'd ask you dear reader to check out any one recipe in the book and know with some absurdness that the remaining recipes are just as healthy, delicious and inspired as the first.

A Literary Sampler

Everyday Isn’t Perfect is just a good, well-written book to read your life into balance, covering both diet and exercise in a common sense, practical way. K.L. Register’s little tome is part prose and part poetry with sections of self-help and a taste of memoir, a literary sampler if you will. And … it’s funny, too. I thought I was the only one that didn’t like mac and cheese.

Here’s a sample of the goods: “You shouldn't have to beg a person to be a part of your life. There are too many people searching for someone like you,” “genuine friends have emotional hearts that will always and forever be invisibly tied together,” and my favorite, “You were not put on Earth to be perfect; you were put here for a purpose. You are alive today because there is a meaning, a purpose, a plan for your life. You still have work to do!”

This is and easy read that will only take you a day or two when you get started, but you should keep it close when you need a little push. Highly recommended!

I enjoy reading Dr

I enjoy reading Dr. Register's tweets on Twitter, and as they follow from her book I couldn't resist buying it. While this book is aimed at women I've found it offers a lot for men too. I especially like that she includes personal stories from her own life to drive a point home or to illustrate a state of being. She shows her own bumps and bruises, which makes what she says all the more meaningful. She has a nurturing style of writing that really identifies her thought process and to me the reader, words of encouragement. She has a unique way of expressing a thought that I may or may not have heard before. While some of her personal stories make me go "Oh, my," others make me chuckle, and in the end, I follow it to the point she is making. My personal favorite is Eddie with 2 glasses, and her opening quote to "Stop zooming in and focusing on what other people have going on in their lives...." This way of putting it, this message, really resonates with me. Thank you.

Awesome, awesome and motivating read. This has really meant a lot to me. I've learned a lot about myself, from reading this book. Dr. K. L. Register's words are truly powerful, and has motivated me, to be the best me, that I can be. It's also, forced me, to get out of my comfort zone, and push myself to do and be more! I'm really looking forward to her next publishing. I highly recommend this one!

The second section looks at educational planning. It considers the influence and role of educational planning in general, and looks at particular challenges to teaching staff, school-business linkages, and those presented by primary, secondary, vocational and adult education.

Great fun for kids who play the online game, or who just love animals!

My daughter is a devoted player of the Animal Jam game online, and I've seen the cleaver ways the game incorporates educational material and drives curiosity about science. I had no hesitation in picking up this book for her, and we have both enjoyed it tremendously. This is the perfect marriage of the visually arresting virtual world of Animal Jam and the incredible animal photography and educational resources of National Geographic. The book juxtaposes the fictional environments and animals of Jamaa with their real-world counterparts, weaving in interesting facts and valuable background info to help kids understand the ecological roles these animals play.

Primarily a guide to the online game, the book provides a lot of information that may be new to even longtime Animal Jam players. Each region of the game has its own chapter, and every species of animal that appears in the game has at least a page or two. I was impressed by the sort of educational divergences from this primary theme that the author decided to take. For instance, the chapter about Jamaa Township (a central location in the game world) includes interesting tangents on the history of city dwelling and the construction of modern "green" cities. My daughter particularly loved reading the story behind some of the game's main characters, and even now she is scurrying back and forth between her room where she's reading the book, and the computer room where she's checking out some hidden game feature she just discovered. I predict I'll be seeing this behavior a lot in the coming weeks.

The rich photography and vibrant, kid-friendly graphic design you would expect from National Geographic are well represented here. Animal Jam has a very unique art style that I believe has contributed to the game's popularity, and the book's designers have done a great job bringing it to life. The book is organized into bite-sized chunks of text and artwork, in a magazine-like format that will be familiar to readers of NatGeo's other kids' books, such as their almanac. Based on vocabulary and complexity, I would guess the ideal solo reader is between 7-10 years old; although kids as young as 3-4 will certainly enjoy the imagery as it's read to them.

Whether your child is a die-hard Animal Jam player or just loves animals, this is a great summer book that packs a lot of fun into its 240 pages.

Great for Animal Jam game lovers or for any animal lovers!

All three of my kids (11, 9, and 7) love this game and have learned a lot about animals in this super fun virtual world. This book is great because it gives lots of factual information about the real-life animals, plus the back stories on the alphas and avatars. I was impressed with how much they managed to pack in and how fun this book is to browse. My youngest read it cover to cover without any prompting (and she's been avoiding some of the rest of her summer reading). What a cool blend of real and virtual, fact and fiction, photos and art! National Geographic offers so many amazing ways for kids to learn these days.
