Fallen came to me while walking in the country side by my home.� I immediately went and wrote down the ideas and made an outline of the story.� The characters came to me easily and I look forward to writing more in this series as I have discovered a new found sense of creativity.

About the Author
Emily Clarke is a writer from England. A British woman with an ever growing creative side, I have always enjoyed writing from an early age. Only now, do my thoughts escape my head, spilling into the realm of others. Fallen is my novel and book one in The Fallen Saga. The idea for Fallen came to me on trips to the countryside and filled my head throughout the day. I started writing my ideas down and came up with an outline for the book and I let the words take over. Although already published in various poetry journals, I wanted to express myself through prose and Fallen gave me that opportunity. I look forward to writing even more in this series as Fallen has awakened a new found sense of creativity.

Thom Young is a writer from Texas. His work has been in 3am magazine, Word Riot, The Legendary, and many other places. A 2008 Million Writers Award nominee for his story Perico. His books are popular all over the world including his latest GRINDHOUSE which hit #1 Kindle Free Horror four days in a row.

Good Reading

Love isn’t supposed to hurt. What happens when it does?

The friendship that Julie developed made me smile. It was exactly what she needed at that time in her life, so I was glad to see it show up so early on in the plot. Seeing how this character reacted to her new friend gave me glimpses of their personalities that I would have never otherwise seen.

There were many punctuation errors and run-on sentences. At times I had trouble understanding what the narrator was saying because I couldn’t easily tell where one idea ended and the next one began. The misuse of commas was especially noticeable. It was the most common type of error I noticed by far.

This book dealt with several sensitive issues. I appreciated how delicately Ms. Clarke handled these portions of the plot. The subject matter was serious and often difficult to think about, but she discussed all of it with the raw honesty that was necessary in order to get her point across.

The pacing of the storyline was uneven. Much more time was spent setting up Julie’s introduction to Nick than was spent exploring why he was so interested in her or why he refused to respect her boundaries. There was a lot of potential space for conflict here, so I was surprised to see how long it took for his controlling personality to emerge.

One of the things I liked the most about the dialogue was how much information Ms. Clarke managed to pack into those conversations. I learned a lot about the characters and what motivated them through what they did and did not say to one another. This was a good choice for a novel of this length.

I’d recommend Fallen to anyone in the mood for something dramatic.

Promising start to a new series

When Julie’s dad gets a new job, they relocate to Texas. To say Julie does NOT want to leave her home in Connecticut and move would be an understatement. She is leaving her best friend and possible boyfriend. The high school her parents have enrolled her in in Texas is a private, upper class school, and she doesn’t fit in with her all black wardrobe. She is, however, happy to find on her first day a kindred soul – another person who doesn’t fit in. Together, they meet for coffee, smoke cigarettes and talk about boys. Especially one in particular – Nick.

“The Fallen” is a definite YA book and deals with issues concerning today’s teens. I really like the way her cutting problems were addressed and Julie’s own feelings. I thought the author treated the parents as almost a nonentity. Even after the cutting scare, they were never around. Is yoga really more important than your daughter? If your child is obviously having problems, why is she always alone in her room? I mean ALWAYS.
The book is mostly written in conversation. Normally I would like this as I don’t particularly care for a page written to describe what someone is wearing. However, at times it was hard to figure out who was saying what. And there often wasn’t much notification when the “scenes” were changing. As a warning, this book ends on a cliff hanger.

Julie Anderson didn't want to leave her life in Connecticut, but her father got a job in Texas. She is soon enrolled in a private school and discovers she does not fit in...until she meets a kindred spirit. Julie and her new friend hang out, smoke cigarettes and talk about boys. One in particular...Nick. Nick is a fallen Angel who has taken a vow to never fall in love, especially with a human being. When Julie's mother is killed in an accident she soon learns her fate lays in the balance and is falling for Nick.

Emily Clarke has written an amazing YA book. It was well written and I didn't find many grammar mistakes. Although to me, personally, those don't bother me. Fallen does address many teen issues and they are dealt with in a serious manner and doesn't make light of the situation. Ms. Clarke also has a way of telling a story and pulling the reader in and making you feel a spectator during the event. There were some spots that I couldn't tell who was talking but once I re-read through I got it better. That is what makes a book good you can read and re-read and still find things to discover. A warning though this is a cliffhanger, but well worth the read and continue the series a discover more in Emily Clarke's world of Nick and Julie and whats to come next.

About the Author

Dr. Alexander Clemm, Ph.D. is a Senior Architect with Cisco Systems. He has been involved with integrated management of networked systems and services since 1990. Alex has provided technical leadership for many network management development and engineering efforts from original conception to delivery to the customer. They include management instrumentation of network devices, turnkey management solutions for packet telephony and managed services, and management systems for Voice over IP networks, broadband access networks, and provisioning of residential subscriber services. Alex has approximately 30 publications related to network management and 15 patents pending. He is on the Organizing Committee or Technical Program Committee of the major technical conferences in the field, including IM, NOMS, DSOM, IPOM, and MMNS, and he served as Technical Program Co-chair of the 2005 IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management. He holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Munich and a Master’s degree from Stanford University.

There are many reasons to read Onward Towards our Noble Deaths, and it’s hard to pick which one to start with- a good problem to have. I’ll start by approaching the “single volume aspect.” I’ve read All You Need is Kill and Uzumaki, the two standalone omnibuses I see the most on people’s shelves, and would place Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths solidly above them both. About 350 pages, but since it was originally published in 1973, it follows the older style of having more frames per page a lot of the time, so it’s well filled, similar in that respect to the text-heavy stories of Ohba & Obata (the duo that wrote Death Note and Bakuman), although in a different way that doesn’t have that same text-heavy feel.

It’s written by Shigeru Mizuki, and, as it says in the back of the book, is 90% fact (and then they tell you what exactly was changed from the actual happening). Shigeru Mizuki is one of Japan’s most legendary mangaka, on the same tier as Osamu Tezuka, (although I found OTND a little more processable by the modern reader than Adolf) although he’s only recently been introduced to the Western eye. He also happens to have been a soldier, who lost his left arm to the war, along with nearly dying to malaria, and those experiences form the basis of OTND. Mizuki’s art style is hands down better than anything I’ve read pre-90s. There’s a provocative contrast between the backgrounds, which are detailed on par with the best of modern artwork, and the characters, who use Mizuki’s distinct stylistic “cartoonish” rendering that’s reminiscent of Ping Pong, Tatami Galaxy, and other “unusual but better” styles (I haven’t read Oyasumi PunPun yet, but I’d imagine it’s similar conceptually to how that plays out with the main character. As a side note, in Urasawa’s Manben series about making manga, Mizuki gets mentioned a lot, and I think was referenced in the Inio Asano episode because of the similarities).

Without spoiling anything, I think I can safely say that OTND is about the tragic absurdity of war, with all the weight of the historical “this really happened” aspect, and a man who suffered greatly from its first-hand perspective. In some ways the themes parallel the classic film Bridge over the River Kwai, only coming from the Japanese soldier’s viewpoint, with the conversations of the characters usually feeling more like Full Metal Jacket. That’s really what’s astounding about OTND- seeing what the atmosphere was like for the “other side,” and the way that one senseless event led to another without anyone seeming to actually want to go down that path, you can’t escape the nagging question, “why did this have to happen?”

I want to keep this short, so let me just say that the omnibus is fantastically bound, and looks great on the shelf, as well as in your hands. It’s also nice how when there is a big 2 page spread they usually broke it up with panels so you don’t lose anything to the binding (there was once where they didn’t, I’m not sure why). It’s put out by Drawn & Quarterly, who I’d never heard of before, so they could probably use your support. I’ll definitely be getting more of their Mizuki as soon as I can.

I've read the Marine account of the battle at Cape Glouster. This book gave me the Japanese side of the same battle. This battle was the first combat engagement my dad was a participant before being killed on the first day of battle at Pelileu on September 15, 1944.
