About the Author

Richard M. Perloff, Professor of Communication at Cleveland State University, has been on the faculty at Cleveland State since 1979. He has written scholarly textbooks on persuasion, political communication, and the communication of AIDS prevention. Dr. Perloff is a nationally-known expert on the third-person effect, the divergent perceptions of mass media impact on others and the self. From 2003 to 2011, he served as chair and the first director of the School of Communication at Cleveland State. Perloff enjoys teaching undergraduate persuasion, graduate persuasion, and political communication courses at Cleveland State. He is a Fellow of the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research, writes feature stories for Cleveland weekly newspapers, and has received city and state-wide journalism awards for his work. He lives in Beachwood, Ohio with his family, is an early morning swimmer, and newspaper-with- coffee aficionado.

great overview of theories of persuasion

I have used this book and its previous edition in a graduate-level course in strategic communications. It has been a perennial favorite with my students and I have heard from several who I advise for their theses projects that they refer back to it to refresh their memories on relevant theories of persuasion. I have yet to see a text that covers such a range of theories and that presents them (and their critiques) in such a comprehensive way. An appropriate text for upper-level undergrad or grad courses.

Great book on the basics of persuasion.

This book is easy to read and understand. The concepts are backed up with studies and real-world examples, not too much speculation and theorizing. There is so much thought-provoking material, it really stands out for a textbook. In fact, this is one of the best textbooks I have ever seen.
Want to persuade people in everyday life? This isn't a bad place to start learning about it. You'll get an overview of dozens and dozens of ways to become more persuasive, why they work, and examples of how to use them.

A Wonderful Textbook

I teach a course in social influence at a local university, and this is the textbook that I like to use. Some of my students think it is overly dense, but a textbook isn't supposed to read like a novel. It has a great range of information, and is written from a communications, rather than a psychological, perspective. I find it highly readable and accurate, and love the section on propaganda. I hope a second edition will be available soon.

About the Author
STAFF SERGEANT MICHAEL GOLEMBESKY served 8 years with the United States Marine Corps and is a combat veteran of the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars. Golembesky served as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller with Marine Special Operations Team 8222 (MARSOC). His previous book, Level Zero Heroes, was a New York Times bestseller.

A Must Read Account of Teamwork

I just finished this book and probably need a little more time to digest it all. However, I wanted to get this review out there in hopes it inspires just one person to buy the book. This is a true, gritty in the muck book about a MARSOC team that fought together, sacrificed together, grew together and died together. I have read almost every book published about the Afghan war and this book does the absolute best job of painting the picture of what life was like for SOF guys out in the armpit of hell(AFGHANISTAN). Lots of action as well, no clear political agenda (although at times I wanted to jump back in time and strangle some of the REMFs mentioned in the book for what they would not allow the operators to do). All around excellent read and I truly wish I could shake all of these guys hands. Thank you to all our Marines who fought, bled and died for us. Those who give thanks to God for you all everyday still exist out here and will never forget your sacrifice.

Outstanding follow up to Level Zero Heroes. Michael Golembesky has done it again with his thrilling, honest, and real narrative about the actions of the men of MSOT 8222. This is a harrowing story of the difficult and complex situation of being a small SOF team in a ridiculous rules-based combat zone and how they overcame it. It's clear to me that these men are the best there is and have set a bar for being such a new member of the special operations community. Rob Brown graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1971 with a BMath degree. He added a MA in Gerontology in 1994 (Waterloo) and a PhD (Gerontology) from Simon Fraser University in 1997. Rob is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, and an Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society. Professor Brown was President of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries in 1990/91 and served on the Board of Governors of the Society of Actuaries from 1992 to 1996. From 1997-99, he was SoA Vice-President and in 1999, Rob was elected President-elect of the Society of Actuaries (his term as SoA President will run from October 2000 to October 2001). Rob Brown is presently Professor of Actuarial Science and Director of the Institute of Insurance and Pension Research at the University of Waterloo.

Great instructions! Just what I needed!

Gave it 4/5 because kindle version has errors and typos.
- 1.20 misaligned problems with wrong results (d and f)
- 2.2 b) t3=t1=2d=18 should be t3=t1+2d=18
- 4.10 b) j22 is given, whereas the solution is for j2

And those just are the problems that I spoted with my mathematically untrained eyes.

Overall great content! It's a pity that my university didn't offer a finance course that would focus solely on solving such problems

If anyone knows other good book on mathematics of finance (with solutions) please let me know! Would highly appreciate!

A Complete Treatment of Financial Mathematics

A very complete treatment of traditional financial mathematics. For example, it cleared up questions I had about mortgage payment divisions into interest and principal parts and the true equation for the effective yield rate given the market yield rate along with the inflation rate.

Best information on psychokinesis!

If you want to understand psychokinesis/telekinesis and how to develop your own skills, then Psychokinesis The way of the Psion, is the book to get. This book does not waste your time with a lot of fluff. There are exercises and examples, which are clear and easy to follow, as well as demonstrations to be found on online. What I enjoyed most, is that it reads like a peek into a personal journal. This is an honest account of someones spiritual journey, and I was surprised by how much of myself I saw in this story. If you are interested in this phenomenon, and you're willing to put some training time in; then I say from experience that you can learn this:)

It has a lot of information on how to do psychokinesis. It is written by a guy that has actually tried to do it himself. Too many others are written by skeptics who haven't done anything like this and can't tell you how. This guy knows what he is talking about.

The soundscape--a term coined by the author--is our sonic environment, the ever-present array of noises with which we all live. Beginning with the primordial sounds of nature, we have experienced an ever-increasing complexity of our sonic surroundings. As civilization develops, new noises rise up around us: from the creaking wheel, the clang of the blacksmith’s hammer, and the distant chugging of steam trains to the “sound imperialism” of airports, city streets, and factories. The author contends that we now suffer from an overabundance of acoustic information and a proportionate diminishing of our ability to hear the nuances and subtleties of sound. The most important book on sound in 150 years.

When R. Murray Schafer first published TUNING OF THE WORLD (the subtitle of this edition) in 1977, it had a stunning and lasting affect on musicians and recordists throughout the world. Every facet of this work is important to know about and the narrative still reads like a contemporary novel - impossible to put down and never dated. He informs us how to re-train our ears to listen better and more wisely. He defines, for the first time, the soundscape and the myriad ways it fits into and affects our lives.

This book is seminal to my work as a naturalist and sound designer and I have read it many times in the past three decades. It is that important.

This book is essential if you are working anywhere in the Audio Industry. It gives you the necessary appreciation, and application of sound, in and out, while allowing for silence to be equally as relavent. R. Murray Schafer is the God of The Soundscape!

I read the first edition 20+ years ago and have always since tried to turn my musician friends on to it. If you compose, produce or do any type of sound design the info in this book is essential. It really opened my ears and my mind. Great book.

Great Series and written Well

Our son loves all of the "I survived" books. We were a little hesitant in this particular book because of the sensitive nature of the subject. We decided that we would let him read it anyway and it really helped him understand this part of history with a child like history story. I would definitely recommend this book and the entire series for young readers who enjoy learning about history. He is 10 years old and doesn't have a hard time following the story. I did not read it so I cannot elaborate on the exact story. Great read for a young son.

horrific based on what happened during those terrible war years in occupied Nazi territory

I actually read the book myself. I bought two copies. One I gave to my grandson...and hope he will share with the other grandkids when he's done. Or I just might buy them their own copy. This is a fictional story based on true facts. It is a story that is both terrifying, horrific based on what happened during those terrible war years in occupied Nazi territory. It is a book that will help young readers understand that particular war. It will also help them understand that good does win over evil, and thankfully the evil doers were defeated in this war. It teaches also what is tolerance, anti-Semitism, bigotry. What happens when people who are culturally different do not get along. It teaches that we must stand up for our fellow men against this kind of evil. It teaches that hopefully what happened during that time period never happens again. Anyone who wants their children to really enjoy reading, should order these I Survive books.
