The Last Book...I think...is well worth the read

I believe by the way the book ended that this is the final book in the series and I think the longest which I was grateful for and I really did like it. Unlike the other 4 before it, this one I think takes place over a few more days or even weeks...based on everything that happened in it, I can only assume because there were no real time frame indicators (if there were was I may have missed them...oops). Regardless, a lot of things got wrapped up...the issue with Amy, with William, and even with Harold a little bit. We got a better insight into who Carmen is and her past and why she really puts up with Harolds b.s. I liked it. The "scenes" in this one were plentiful and far from lacking which is something Sheeran rarely disappoints in if ever. Read it, finish the series, and smile at the ending :)

I have to admit I ordered this book for a class but I have found myself reading much of the content not assigned. The poetry of the time is different than what I am used to. It is very tied into the indecision of the British royals about the state religion.

Insights into Muslim and Christian cultures based on understanding Genesis and Paul

How do men and women relate to each other in Peshawar, Pakistan – a culture informed by Islam? How is that similar and yet different from how men and women related to each other in first century Roman culture? How did the Apostle Paul incorporate aspects of the first century culture into worship, and yet move the culture toward a decreased power distance between men and women – a new Christian culture in which a wife was expected to wear a veil in the church, and yet she could pray and prophecy in the church? Patrick Krayer draws on his decades of living in Peshawar Pakistan, combined with a thorough understanding of Paul’s writing, to suggest ways that cross-cultural workers can be sensitive to the culture, and yet challenge the culture at its core to come to a place of less power distance and greater interpersonal trust.

It is easy to be blind to how our own culture causes us to interpret scripture, and to assume that the way we do things is “the right way.” This book helped me to view scripture and my own culture through the lens of a different culture. Patrick’s exegesis of 1 Corinthians was particularly memorable to me in showing the parallelism of Paul’s instructions to men and women. His exegesis of the other Pauline passages dealing with the relationship between men and women seem both more culturally sensitive and yet transformative than other commentaries I have read on this subject.

This book is tough to read because of the depth of research behind it. The footnotes are extensive (and optional for the more casual reader). But it is well worth the effort. This book should be required reading for anyone from a Western culture working in an Islamic context, or for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Pauline teachings regarding the relationship between men and women.

The Standard Evangelical Commentary on John

Anyone hoping to write an exhaustive commentary on the Fourth Gospel will die long before they finish. The FG is widely recognized as being the kind of work in which the interpretational possibilities are almost endless. One can focus on Christology, election, sacramentalism, atonement and resurrection, the church, or none of the above. As a result, when one reads any commentary on John, the reader is advised to pay attention to what the author tends to pay attention to, because this will say something about the author's own theological emphases. This is good to know because not only will the reader get a better idea of where the author is coming from, he will also be on alert for ways in which the commentary may be imbalanced as a result of emphasizing certain things and neglecting others. Such is the reality of Johannine scholarship and the richness of the FG.

In the case of Carson, the reader will find the strongest evangelical defense of apostolic authorship among the commentary encyclopedia devoted to the FG. As a result, the reader will also find a commentary that takes the historical veracity of the narrative seriously and attempts to interact with the material from the perspective of considering the material to be normative and historically reliable. This alone separates this commentary from most other major commentaries on the FG in the last 40 years.

Carson properly interacts with the heavy hitters in Johannine scholarship such as Bultmann, Brown, Barrett, Smith, and Culpepper. Carson's interaction with Brown and Culpepper is especially good and provides a solid rebuttal to their differing approaches to literary interpretation.

The commentary is thorough in its coverage of the FG, but like all commentaries, is inevitably incomplete. Carson has his hot buttons just like everyone else, and the result is a good emphasis on issues such as authorship, testimony, election, and christology. The downside is that other emphases, like the much neglected motif of hospitality in the FG and its ramifications on christology, election, the church, etc is ignored. Is this enough to give the book a 4 star rating instead of 5? If so, then no commentary on John would be worthy of a 5 star rating for the reasons already mentioned. For what Carson attempts to do, he does it very well. For this reason, the book deserves 5 stars and should be the standard work on John that evangelicals in particular should consult.

A great John Commentary

I have just finished reading through this commentary for the third time. I have read many commentaries on John's Gospel and consider this one of the best evangelical commentaries on John available today. Carson interacts with many views on controversial items but is never boring. The commentary is a good mix of excellent and profound scholarship but never loses its readability. If one is not familiar with the Greek Language of the Bible this commentary is a good one. If you do have a working knowlege of Greek, Carson is an excellent Greek exegete and you will find satisfaction here. I recommend this great commentary wholeheartedly.

A Sound, Reliable and Illuminating Commentary on John

I keep this book on my desk right beside Craig S. Keener's commentaries. Carson writes clearly and succinctly and touches on almost every mystery of the Gospel that concerns me. I think he is completely correct in his criticism of the skeptics. The book is obviously shaped by immense faith and displays great attention to current scholarship and to the details of the text of John. The book also contains a marvelous and forceful summary of the arguments for and against the belief that the Apostle John bar Zebedee wrote the gospel. This is a decisive and brave commentary. Also recommended are all D.A. Carson's other books, including Divine Sovereignty & Human Responsibility. This scholar's output is enormous. It will take me years to catch up with what he has written, and I doubt I'll ever catch up with all of it. I admire him greatly, and recommend him wholeheartedly. --- Addendum added May 16, 2008 as I continue to read this book: There is something commonsensical and firm about the way this author presents his points; he dispatches the objections or contrary theory of others with conviction and an economy of language. Again and again, he appeals simply and unobtrusively to sound judgment as to points over which people argue, and it is refreshing. --- Some scholars today are so hampered by earlier skeptical objections, speculations, and disputes that it is difficult to get through their books. One gets the feeling sometimes that some authors are writing for one another. ---- Not so with D.A. Carson. His writing serves the text and the mainstream reader as well as the scholar. ---- Yet he is ever the Christian (charitable) writer. ---- I sense no snideness or unkindness, but simply a great deal of well earned self confidence, and a straightforward appeal to sound logic. Some readers may find this commentary particularly accessible because of all this. The writing is brisk.

About the Author
Dr. Muriel James is a licensed marriage and family counselor, an international consultant in human relations to corporations, non-profit organizations and government agencies, and was an advisor to the California Commission on the Status of Women. Dr. James received her doctorate from the University of California at Berkely. She is past president of the International Transactional Analysis Association, and was a colleague of Dr. Eric Berne. Dr. James is author and co-author of seventeen books, including Breaking Free, Hearts on Fire, The Better Boss in Multicultural Organizations and Passion for Life: Psychology and the Human Spirit.
Dr. Dorothy Jongeward is an internationally prominent management consultant who has pioneered the field of productivity through "people skills." She served on the faculty of the University of California Extension for many years and has made a lasting contribution to understanding the psychology of women. She is a Teaching Member of the International Transactional Analysis Association and a Life Member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Counselors. She has authored or co-authored seven other succesful books including Women as Winners and Winning with People. Her creative career is cited in many references, including The World's Who's Who of Women. In 1990, Dr. Jongeward was selected as one of six alumni of Washington State University "who have made significant contributions to history and culture in this century."

While there were many exceptional books about the concept, such as "I'm Okay, You're Okay," and "Games People Play," this was the one book that brought all of the concepts together.

And it's not BS.

Years later, TA is but a minor memory from my youth. But, then I see someone engaging in a game of "Why don't you? Yes, but?" and I get reminded of how valuable this book is.

Great Tool for Self-Learning and Improvement

I first discovered this book in the original edition in the early 1970s and used it for a course in self-discovery that I taught at the University of Akron. Since then I have purchased and given away many copies. The book continues to be relevant and the latest update, only extends the value by putting more up to date illustrations.

This book is based on two of the best models for self-development, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis. These two meld nicely into the latest information coming out of the field and research.

This is a really good book in spite its age

This is a really good book in spite its age. In other words it's timeless. I have read it before and the older edition had perhaps a better winner and loser thinking section in it, although these sections in the old version could have used some improvement, and in some ways they did, but in some ways they did not by unneeded editing.. I have not read the sections on sexuality, because, simply put that is not were my concerns are then or now. The rest I know to be pretty darn good.

Excellent resource for the new ICU nurse!!!

I have been a fan of Sylvia Price's Pathophysiology text since I first studied for the CCRN exam in 1982. I have bought periodic updated versions since that time and recommend it to all my preceptees and CCRN study group members. The clarity of her authors' explanations makes understanding the pathophysiology of conditions commonly seen in ICU very easy. I do not have enough words to express how highly I recommend this book to any nurse beginning a critical care career.

Everything you always wanted to know about pathophys........

I have the first edition of Dr. Lorraine Wilson's pathophys. text and have just bought the fifth edition. It is an excellent resource for any nurse who wants to maintain a current knowledge base in pathophysiology. It is a great resource. It is obvious that the main editor, Dr. Wilson, takes great pride in the accuracy of the submissions and strives to produce a high quality text book. I understand that Dr. Wilson is completing the 6th edition but no word as to when it will be released.

Decent book; but it leads into one of the most poorly planned arcs ever

As far as graphic novels go, this one has good artwork and dialogue, I love Larocca's pencils on it, much as I love his pencils in any other X-title I've read. It also has an interesting team-up of the X-Men team from the second series (i.e., "Golgotha" going forward, with Rogue, Iceman, Gambit, Havok, and Polaris), Storm from the XSE taking an uncharacteristic break from Uncanny, and - surprise! - the Black Panther, one of the most obscure characters in the Marvel Universe.

Someone's mutating animals into...well, mutants. Think "The Island of Dr. Moreau" with maniacal chimps, crossed with a little bit of George Orwell's "Animal Farm," and you have the plot. It's contrived but entertaining. Emma Frost detects odd mutant activity in the African region of Niganda (interestingly enough, located very close to Wakanda). She sends Havok's team to check it out, and Storm accompanies them, hinting that she has a "history" with T'Challa, the Black Panther. That history is actually noted (very, very briefly) in Marvel Team-Up, as well as Black Panther #26, according to a recent article on X-Axis. The current miniseries "Storm and the Black Panther" by Eric Jerome Dickey details this "history" at length.

The X-Men arrive in Niganda to find mutilated corpses, grotesquely altered killer crocodiles, a savage man-eating lion, and a scientist with a penchant for plotting the overthrow of the government with the aid of his intellectually enhanced apes. There's a lot going on in this book, considering the story arc in its original printing only bundled together two issues of X-Men and two issues of Black Panther. (these days Marvel TPBs bundle together an average of five issues each). Polaris is kidnapped and held hostage; considering how powerful she is, its surprising that she was captured at all.

Storm's seeming, tentative relationship with Logan is put on hold (again, sigh), even though it has developed somewhat in the pages of "Uncanny" since Marvel's Reload event. There's one optimistic moment where Logan tells Storm "Guess I've always wanted to be someone's mutant in shining armor." But that was it. We see that her relationship with T'Challa that she previously had was "complicated," but we don't really see why she wants to rekindle it, it's not well-defined by Milligan or Hudlin, in my opinion. It's also unfair that T'Challa gets to kiss the girl, sorry for the spoiler, but I was disappointed by it.

Other highlights are the interesting bit of animosity between Storm and Havok, since Storm refuses to follow Havok's orders as team leader; and Havok's brief scuffle with Emma over how effective he is as leader compared to Cyclops. Polaris and Havok are revisiting their relationship again in the wake of the mess that Austen made of it during his run on X-Men. I breathed a sigh of relief about that.

By the end of the story, we find Storm planning to stay in Africa to "help who she can there," which makes little sense, in context of her being the leader of the XSE. This will also feed into the upcoming "Bride of the Panther" arc by Reginald Hudlin this summer. Even though Marvel is still good at conveying character's emotions and depth, they need to work on their plots and stick to continuity established back when X-Men books were still relatively young titles.

Get this one if you are a completist, but skip it if you hate seeing a great heroine (Storm) being misused. Again.

Pleasantly suprised

Quality of paper, binding was better than expected, and the artwork was as good or better than other Marvel books. Pretty good, in other words.

The story was interesting - I am a fan of the X-men and SpiderMan books and liked the X men appearance, but liked how BP held his own against them. The political references may be above the heads of some younger readers, but added a subtle understory. That, along with the romantic tension between BP and Storm, created a pretty intriguing story.

Black Panther lack luster

If your like myself and want to collect Marvels Black Panther novels then go ahead. However after reading this novel, I felt that it fell short of depth on all aspects. You would expect that if the x-men are involved their would be more action. The plot is weak and never develops into anything else besides "Spoiler Alert" the evil mad scientist. There's nothing in here that pushes Black Panther to his limits. Besides good drawing, I wouldnt have given this three stars.

The Birth and Evolution of Today's So Calif Hot Rod Scene

Dean Batchelor grew up with the Southern California hot rod scene, and went on to pioneer much of the postwar LA publishing industry that launched hot rodding as a nationwide cultural phenomenon.
As an author, the late Dean Batchelor was a gem. Reflecting this, American Hot Rod - his last book - is uniquely well written, entertaining, and keenly balanced.
Anyone who ever admired a '32 deuce coupe (or wondered what the Beachboys were singing about) will love it. Lots of pictures; chapters on the birth of drag racing, Bonneville, flathead V8's - and all presented in a highly readable format. A book you'll keep and enjoy.

Dry Lakes and Drag Strips:The American Hot Rod(Muscle Car Color History)2002,ISBN 0760312168,192 pages with a Glossary of terms used then and a color gallery it is the Softcover version/same book as The American Hot Rod (1994,Hardcover,different cover,same author who passed away sadly,Rest in Peace).This book is an excellent source and while the author admits to be a "Ford Guy" as he put it in one of the chapters he covers Four-Bangers as well as Flatheads,Chevys and Caddy/Olds OHV and Buick.I Love the Cover,and opted to get the softcover instead just for the cover and the more Fitting title.It Covers Muroc,Bonneville,Harper,The Publications,The Shops and so fourth,Also Covers the Racing Specials such as Max Balchowsky's Old Yeller and Other Neat cars.I love the Chevy Four stuff and Chevy Engined or GM brand stuff.I just wish there could have been more on that,as the author puts it in one chapter that he saw on a License Plate or sticker:"Real Fords have Chevys In Them".
An overall Stellar Read and great photography both in the black and white and Color,an Bygone era and he manages to somehow not include a status/class envy in it as the rivalry between Hotrodders/Sportscar Crowd did exist which I think is good in this day and age when everyone envies someone.Beautiful Layout and large softcover,I am very happy I own it.
