An Emotional Roller Coaster

I didn't think N.R. Walker could top Blind Faith, but she did and let me tell you....my heart was broken! I felt an array of emotions that I never expected throughout the entire book. We start with Carter and Isaac still happy after being together for about a year. Isaac is still his stubborn self at times and Carter is still the sweetest. But together, they balance each other perfectly.

Carter wants to live together but Isaac is fighting him. That is until he experiences something that changes his mind. So then we think...nothing can tear them apart now! Enter Josh....ugh!

I have to say that I NEVER liked Josh. What I liked even less was the way Isaac took to him and completely made Carter feel unwanted and even worse, unloved. I think deep down, Isaac was missing something from his relationship with Carter and found it with Josh. It also didn't help that Josh knew all the right buttons to push to win Isaac over. Still, I hated Isaac for his treatment of Carter.

I wasn't expecting these turn of events but I have to say kuddos to N.R. Walker for adding this "twist" to the story. I don't want to give too much away, but it's obvious that Carter and Isaac's relationship is put to the test and how it turns out is for you, the reader, to find out. All I can say is this story took me from one end of the emotional spectrum to the other. I felt such sympathy for Carter and the complete opposite for Isaac. Just when I had the overwhelming desire to kick Isaac's ass, he would suddenly do something to redeem himself which was so frustrating!

I also loved Mark so much that I wish he was my BFF! He is a true friend to Carter throughout the book and what makes him even more attractive is his wonderful sense of humor. He was truly my favorite supporting character. I hope one day to read a story about him (hint, hint). :)

As if it wasn't obvious, I definitely recommend this book. I really enjoy Walker's style of writing and have never been disappointed. I look forward to reading even more from her.

WOW... I liked book 2 even more then 1!

As close to perfect as it gets for me. It made me laugh, cry (both good and sad tears), swear, pissed me off and made my heart soar!!! Isaac is fiercely independent and as stubborn as they come! I'm not sure if I wanted to hug him, or to slap him more throughout! LOL I understood where he was coming from I did, I just hurt when Carter hurt. And speaking of Carter! Everyone should have someone like him in their life. He's sweet, kind, loving and fiercely loyal.

Then there are the secondary characters. Hannah, Isaac's sister and caretaker. Funny, she's a great blend of her brother, stubborn and Carter, loving and loyal. I'm not sure what either would do without her. Then there is Carlos, Hannah's husband. He's a bit player but one I loved. Always there, lovingly supportive or his wife and her brother, always with a kind word and a wise crack. Speaking of wise cracks.. There is Mark, who's Carters best friend. He's FUNNY, forward, and a sexy flirt! I LOVE HIM! Oh and did I mention there are animals too? LOL

It's a great book and I absolutely adored it!(less)

Amazing Amazing Amazing!

After reading the first book, Blind Faith, I thought there was no way to outdo it. After reading this one, I am completely blown away. Isaac and Carter are IT! I'll repeat, they are IT! I am so disappointed that this will probably be the last book. I laughed and cried and felt so much a part of their relationship, just like the first book. My favorite in both books was the back and forth banter between them, and enjoyed Mark, Hannah, and Carlos even more this time through. This series will stay at the top of my list for years!

Okay but. . .

This book has a decent premise, and I love the detective character, but it needs some work.
First of all, I agree with one previous reviewer -- the "secret" of the book is revealed literally half-way through the read (way too soon). This makes every move by the detective and other characters look so stupid it's not even funny. You really want to like the detective, but after reading him do some really dense things, you lose interest.
I also have a fundamental problem with the book and it's secret. I think the author really needed to get himself a better editor, because there are many inconsistencies that need to be resolved.
Speaking of editing, the book is chock full of poor grammar and missed/mis-used punctuation.
I'd wait for the next book or if you want to read a thriller, get Mark of the Assassin by Silva or something like that.

Not Recommended

This is a book whose premise had potential to be a suspenseful, gripping novel. However, none of that potential is realized. Instead, it is badly written, filled with graphic sex and descriptions of the wealth Voort and his well-to-do partner. I found myself not caring about any of the characters. There's a twist in the middle that makes reading the rest of the book almost irrelevant. I'm always looking for new authors to add to my reading list. Based on this, Black isn't going to be one of them.

This novel is not particularly distinguished-- the characters and settings are a bit too generic-- but what really got to me was the psychology. It is just bad. The details of the mental disorder that the killer suffers from are straight from a bad made-for-TV movie and have no relation to reality at all. He even gets the name wrong, using a distorted form of the old label for this disorder. To me, a good novel must first and foremost have decent psychology behind it, or else it doesn't work. Even comic book and fantasy stories must be grounded in good psychology in order to work and create a connection to the reader. To fudge on this undermines the story in a big way. Maybe he could have gotten away with this if he had gone into the mind of the killer a little more, but he doesn't, probably so he could create some half-hearted red herrings in the first half of the novel.
Also, what I found even more bizarre than the events in the book was a three-page interview at the end between the author and his fictional detective (!?!?!?). If an author wants to generate interest in a character, why not do it in the context of the novel itself? Thumbs down for me.

Must have book...for those who needs it :-)
Note that it comes with both 3.5" and 5.25" diskettes.
Nowadays desktops do not feature 3.5" drives so you'll need buy (or borrow) USB version of this drive to get easy access to the source code.

A Wide Range of Functions

I have used programs from this book for theta functions and for spheroidal wavefunctions, or rather for the corresponding eigenvalues. For the theta functions I could not find equivalent programs elsewhere. A program for the spheroidal wavefunctions from another recipe book returned erroneous values for certain parameter sets. Baker's code, on the other hand, appeared to have been carefully checked, and functioned correctly (as far as I could determine) for a wide range of parameter values. I had no great difficulty with compilation when I used Turbo C, in which apparently the programs were developed; however, Watcom C choked on both. The problems were minor, or should have been, except that the code read as though it were intended for a "most-confusing-C-code" contest.
Baker does not have a table of dependencies in his book, but a DOS executable which is included will give the information, more or less, while engendering homicidal feelings toward the author!
If the code were cleaned up the book would be a "must-have" for physicists and applied mathematicians.
This book is not for the novice! However, if you need accurate values for the less-common transcendental functions, and are comfortable with C-language programming, then you will *certainly* want a copy.

A bazillion functions but poorly written

This book has an enormous number of mathematical functions implemented. Unfortunately, the quality of the code is poor. However, if you buy a copy of A&S, you can use the code as a starting point and it would be faster than writing it from scratch. If you can find the routines you need in the Cephes collection at netlib, I would strongly encourage you to use those instead. On the other hand, there are many routines in this book that I have not seen implementations for elsewhere.

Absolutlely essential tool for Outlook Programming

I am a little more than a novice with VBA, but with Sue's details and explaination of the complex syntax required by Outlook, real progress was possible. I have been able to build an Outlook form with VB Script that collects data form a large number of people within my company and store it on a public foler for futher use and reference. It only took a few weeks to do that and it would not have been possible without this book. Highly recommended.
