Andrea Dalle Vacche

Andrea Dalle Vacche is a highly skilled IT professional with over 15 years of industry experience. He graduated from Univerista degli Studi di Ferrara with an information technology certification. This laid the technology foundation that Andrea has built on ever since. He has acquired various other industry-respected accreditations from big players in the IT industry, which include Cisco, Oracle, ITIL, and of course, Zabbix. He also has a Red Hat Certified Engineer certification. Throughout his career, he has worked on many large-scale environments, often in roles that have been very complex, on a consultant basis. This has further enhanced his growing skillset, adding to his practical knowledge base and concreting his appetite for theoretical technical studying. Andrea's love for Zabbix came from the time he spent in the Oracle world as a database administrator/developer. His time was mainly spent on reducing "ownership costs" with specialization in monitoring and automation. This is where he came across Zabbix and the technical and administrative flexibility that it offered. With this as a launch pad, Andrea was inspired to develop Orabbix, the first piece of open source software to monitor Oracle that is completely integrated with Zabbix. He has published a number of articles on Zabbix-related software, such as DBforBIX. His projects are publicly available on his website at http://www.smartmarmot.com. Currently, Andrea is working as a senior architect for a leading global investment bank in a very diverse and challenging environment. His involvement is very wide ranging, and he deals with many critical aspects of the Unix/Linux platforms and pays due diligence to the many different types of third-party software that are strategically aligned to the bank's technical roadmap. Andrea also plays a critical role within the extended management team for the security awareness of the bank, dealing with disciplines such as security, secrecy, standardization, auditing, regulator requirements, and security-oriented solutions. My name is Grigory, and I am one of the reviewers of the book. This book is written for everyone, but you have to have a little bit of knowledge of Linux system administration and scripting.

During my work on the book with Andrea, I gathered a lot of information and I think many readers would benefit from reading it. It contains a lot of nuances, which one could gather only through his or her own experiences, through trial and error. The author shares this knowledge with everyone so you could take advantage of modern Zabbix usage.
Besides this, you will know how to configure a high availability and failover monitoring infrastructure: clustering database (PostgreSql), mirroring block devices with LVM and DRBD, and using Pacemaker. And of course, you could use the knowledge beyond Zabbix, for example, to configure your application server.
I would recommend this book for system administrators and DevOps, who are concerned about their infrastructure and would like to use modern technologies in their work (for example, sending notifications to WhatsApp messenger).

About the Author
Mike Press is Professor of Design Research and Head of the Art and Design Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University. Rachel Cooper is Professor of Design Management at the University of Salford where she is Director of the Adelphi Institute for Research into Creative Arts and Sciences. The authors collaborated previously in writing The Design Agenda: a guide to successful design management which is published in both English and Chinese. Now the culture wars are the issues-centered conflicts between two passionately polarized groups, the "orthodox" and the "progressive." America's ``identity'' is seen as a history of religious strife in this probing yet somewhat slanted study. Hunter (Sociology and Religious Studies/Univ. of Virginia; American Evangelicalism, 1983) uses historical references to religious battles throughout American history to show how yesterday's ecumenical divisions among Catholics, Protestants, and Jews have become realigned in recent years. Through debates about slavery, the Scopes trial, and the influence of deism on the Constitution, he elaborates on the ``new lines of conflict'' through the eyes of both clergy members and the more ``humanist'' intelligentsia. Hunter is adept at demonstrating how the battles are now between ``orthodox'' and ``progressive'' camps within faiths, and how political mine fields like gay rights, Roe v. Wade, and the ordination of women into the priesthood prompt a nagging concern over the roles of churches and synagogues in American life. The author has a pervasive regard for the role of family--possibly ``the beginning and end of contemporary culture'' since its dissolution may prove fatal to our social order. He also illustrates how the classic dualism between God and Satan has been transformed into an often unscrupulous intrigue between traditionalists and ``secular humanists.'' But Hunter betrays a possible bias regarding homosexuality. Here, the anti-gay ``convictions'' of a Jerry Falwell are treated as more worthy of serious debate than the fulminations against the ``evils'' of race- mixing or ``the Jewish Menace.'' In the end, Hunter seems to favor religious thinking over nontranscendental doctrines. Why the culture wars continue?

This was a textbook for me in seminary. I am in a conservative Presbyterian denomination and studied at a very conservative seminary, and this book got some interesting reviews from the students.
For me, it was a little difficult, since I don't have much background in sociology, but as I trudged through it I really grew to appreciate it. Some of my other classmates loved it too, but there were several who were quite taken aback by it. They didn't like it because Hunter didn't come out and condemn those who were on the wrong side of the culture wars.
But that is just the point - in this book he does not try to point out who is wrong and who is right, his object is to demonstrate why neither side is able to persuade, or prevail against the other.
Each side in the culture war has it's own set of presuppositions and assumptions that it speaks from. Because of this, that which seems most persuasive to one side completely misses those on the other side, because they don't share the same presuppositions. We are talking past one another.
Another problem that Hunter addresses is the issue of extremes and inflammatory rhetoric. Hunter says that, by and large, the culture wars are being fought by people on the extreme ends of their positions. So, the battle of the culture wars is usually fought with inflammatory rhetoric that doesn't persuade, it just angers.
As a sidenote I recently read a story about how communists used to train their young recruits. This particular communist said that when a young person adopted communism the best thing they could do was immediately set them on a street corner passing out communist leaflets. They would get attacked mercilessly, but this attack would only serve to harden and solidify the young communist in his or her beliefs.
I think Hunter shows this - the inflammatory rhetoric used by those on the extreme ends of the culture war debates, only serves to harden the other side in their respective positions.
So, if you are looking for quick answers, or a strategy to defeat your opponents, you won't find it here. But, if you are willing to begin to at least try to understand your opponents, as well as the larger issues, this is a great place to start.

A wide-angle view on American society...

Though the book was published originally published in 1991, it is no wonder that this book is still in print: it is as relevant as ever - and I daresay its relevance is increasing again.

In this book, Hunter gives us a wide-angle view of what is going on in American society since the second half of the twentieth century. Hunter argues that there is a culture war going on. Consequently, he aims at describing the historical and socio-political backgrounds of this cultural conflict.

In five parts, Hunter introduces the culture war (prologue and chapters 1 and 2), maps the lines of conflict (chapters 3 and 4), describes the means of the warfare: the discourse and technology (chapters 5 and 6), and extensively describes the fields of conflict: family, education, media and the arts, law, and electoral politics (chapters 7-11), and finally points out possibilities for a resolution (chapter 12 and the epilogue).

Hunter defines a cultural conflict as "political and social hostility rooted in different systems of moral understanding" (42). According to Hunter, the culture war in America revolves around different worldviews, "our most fundamental and cherished assumptions about how to order or lives - our own lives and our lives together in this society" (42). The contemporary culture war is "a struggle over national identity - over the meaning of America, who we have been in the past, who we are now, and perhaps most important, who we, as a nation, will aspire to become in the new millennium" (50).

Though Hunter acknowledges that the culture war is fought out mainy by the elite and 'knowledge workers', this cultural conflict intersects the lives of most Americans, because the conflict has an impact on every institution of American society: family, education, media, law, and politics.

Hunter writes brilliantly, avoiding jargon as much as possible and defining many concepts with exceptional clarity. This book is really an excellent read.

A personal note:

I am a European citizen and often quite puzzled by what is going on in America. This book gave me a really good perspective on the backgrounds of some American discussions, such as Intelligent Design and why the evolution-creation struggle constantly revolves around education textbooks.

Moreover, this book also made me realize that in contemporary Europe there are plenty of signs that, perhaps, a European culture war is at hand...

An eye-opener, most definitely!

Still Relevent and Timely After All These Years!

The title of my review refers to the fact that this book, while published in '91, is still quite an accurate portrayal of how the culture wars are conducted. The passing of 13 years and tenure of two presidents has not served to ameliorate the culture war between 'traditionalists' and 'progressives.' Hunter, then, was certainly right.

Hunter's main thesis with this book is that, quite frankly, the culture war being fought over our schools, family policy, law, entertainment, etc. is not a war that will likely EVER engender a consensus. In fact, as it stands now, it seems even to proclude rational debate in favor of charged rhetoric, miscaricaturizations of opponents, and...well...mudslinging.

Hunter asserts this thesis, backs it up with chronicles of how the culture war has been conducted thus far, and conjectures as to why it is so. First, he says, we are dealing with core philosophic differences over questions to do with 'how the world should be.' Thus, both sides have deep emotions on the said issues. Second, there is no incentive to try and foster consensus because in an adversarial system like ours, the game is about power - the power to get your policy instituted and your other's quashed. Third, each 'side' operates using somewhat incompatible philosophic assumptions. To the anti-abortion-rights activist, it is a child and abortion is murder. To the abortion rights activist, it is only potential life and prohibiting abortion is denying the mother freedom of person. Where one sees freedom (either of the mother or fetus), the other sees either servitude or murder. Incomatibilities like these, says Hunter, will ensure that there will be no satisfactory end to the culture war - just a long, tiring, rhetorically charged, and endless, struggle.

Hunter makes his arguments well, is quite convincing, and is as objective as possible. He gives both sides due consideration, never caricaturizing them. While the book focuses on the culture wars from somewhat of a religious perspective (Catholic and Evangelical v. Liberal Protestant and Jew) in the end, the book is about the culture war PERIOD. Highly reccomended reading.

Gorey's artfully antiquated style exactly fits Belloc's writing and brings this edition to life-a single pen-and-ink line shows the sister's satisfaction at hearing her brother called to task. The previously unpublished illustrations meticulously convey texture, such as the clothing of the myriad physicians called in to help poor Henry King who swallowed string, and the expressions of the self-satisfied adults seem so earnestly and seriously drawn as to make the whole that much more humorous. The art is refined and genteel-never gory. Teenagers will enjoy this quick and cathartic read.

Non Better a Belloc: Cautionary Tales for Children reviewed

Edward Gorey's first major posthumous publication is like a newly forged work, with freshness and originality. Published several times since 1907, Harcourt's reprint of "Cautionary Tales for Children" contains sixty-one new illustrations enfolding the 95-year old verse, and the result is very satisfying.
Gorey created these illustrations several years ago, but for some reason, chose not publish them while he was alive. Gorey's Victorian style is a delightful fit for Belloc's verse. In fact, those already familiar with Belloc's Cautionary Tales or Cautionary Verses series may very well conclude that they were strong influences for Gorey's "The Beastly Baby", "The Gashlycrumb Tines", "The Epipleptic Bicycle" and others. Certainly, many of the verses in Cautionary Tales feel like they could have been written by Gorey: "Jim, Who ran away from his Nurse, and was eaten by a Lion", "Henry King, Who chewed on bits of String, and was early cut off in Dreadful Agonies", "Matilda, Who told Lies, and was Burned to Death", and so on. Unlike the original cartoonish illustrations by Blackwood, Gorey's illustrations simply set the stage - the big moment is then played out in the imagination. It is Edward Gorey's delightful magic, at work.

Kindle edition is awful

This is a brilliant book, of course, which has been utterly destroyed by the Kindle edition. All the lines of verse have been lost and instead the text is wrapped to solid justification, which makes it terrible to read. Formatting is nonexistent; instead of italics, it uses _underscores around phrases_, which is annoying. I strongly recommend avoiding this issue.

do not buy!

I was expecting a nice simple edition that included Edward Goreys illustrations as the review of the book stated. Why they would include a review for the hardcover edition with this soft cover version is beyond me, as they are COMPETELY different in quality. this edition looks like someone printed it out (poorly) from an 80s style printer and slapped a cheap plastic cover from walmart on it. it looks NOTHING like the "look inside" example at the top of the page. the justification in the print is screwed up, where once there were pictures is now a label "(illustration)" showing where the picture used to be, and the print itself is incredibly light. it really looks like someone just printed out a poorly edited kindle version. I cant believe they are selling this for 10 bucks when you can get the hardcover for $10.88 right now. it is such poor quality i am actually stunned its being offered on amazon; i think someone is printing this out of their garage. i will try to post pictures of this 10 dollar piece of junk soon. i have never had to return anything to amazon but i guess there is a first time for everything....
