In 1966, Allan Weisbecker "made a Manhattan run from the landlocked suburbs" to take in a siren-song movie called The Endless Summer, a documentary that depicted the carefree life of two beach bums who roamed the world in quest of the perfect wave. Weisbecker was hooked, and he became a hardcore wave rider, a fixture on the Long Island surf scene. With a friend, Christopher, he also undertook illegal ways to finance his passion, transporting drugs from exotic countries, a business only briefly interrupted when Christopher went off to Vietnam. There he took fire and came home scarred; something in him changed, and one day he simply vanished.

Weisbecker's book, a sort of gonzo detective story blended with travelogue and peppered with hang-10 jargon, does many things, all of them very well indeed. It offers up a vision of innocent times brought to ruin by war and drugs; it recounts his search for his lost friend, whose life had gone from bad to worse far away from home; and it affords a look inside the strange culture of surfing, whose masters "understood, in a visceral and soulful and inexpressible way, the machinations of the sea, and, by subtle inference, the universe at large."

The foundation of Weisbecker's book packing all of his belongings and his dog into a camper and heading for Central America in search of surf and self, a couple of years short of his 50th birthday has all the makings of a trite, midlife crisis memoir. But the author's flair for describing natural beauty, and his strong sense of narrative rhythm and uncompromising candor, make for a lovely personal reflection that mixes the right amount of dreamy meditation with page-turning allure. Weisbecker (Cosmic Banditos) leaves his Long Island home in search of his childhood friend Christopher, who undertook a similar journey five years earlier and whose only correspondence has been a cryptic postcard signed "Captain Zero." Interspersed in Weisbecker's reports of the people he meets and his neatly composed descriptions of surfing are stories from his past that pace the book, including a hilarious account involving Christopher, an 80-foot banana boat, 10 tons of Colombian marijuana and the front yard of an unsuspecting homeowner on the Housatonic River. Weisbecker clearly delights in storytelling as much as he enjoys language itself, though his writing can get top-heavy; he describes a friend's pest problem as "a zoomorphically motile disarrangement of darting mini-saurians along with fist-sized arachnids and their flossy nets." But usually his imaginative power is better spent, as when he describes an approaching thunderstorm: "The air is charged, buzzing and tingly with ionic discharge seeking ground; then with blinding, brittle bolts that air erupts, illuminating like overexposed photographs the landscape and adjoining sea." Such imagery with a balance of pathos and humor make Weisbecker's account very worthwhile reading.

The trip had the dual purpose of surfing waves and searching for his missing friend (nicknamed "Captain Zero"). The product of this two-year journey, this volume describes Weisbecker's adventures with a lively variety of people he met along the way. Weisbecker's is not the usual traveler's account of Latin America, focusing as it does on personal issues of life and commitment. This volume will be of interest to libraries with travel collections but of little value to Latin American collections, primarily because of limited descriptions of the actual countries visited. As the author of this book i can tell you it's available in soft cover: amazon has its head up its arse in not listing it. i've tried contacting them but i only get a boilerplate replies that make no sense. as far as i can tell, there are no human beings involved with amazon.

Solid and fun read!

What a great read! I'm an avid surfer and also a vanlife enthusiast. Reading a greatly written story about someone fleeing the country to live in their camper and surf their way down through Mexico and Central America hits home for me. I enjoyed every minute of my read and if you have any common interests in these things I strongly suggest picking this book up and giving it a go. I'm willing to bet you'll end up snagging his other books as well!

Heart of Darkness meets Barbarian Days

Heart of Darkness meets Barbarian Days, with a little drug running thrown in. This is Weisbecker's best work and shows him as a master story teller. The stories of pot smuggling are hilarious and frightening, the highlight of the book for me. It is a page turner and hard to put down once you get started. It helps if you are a surfer to get into this, but I think anyone who likes adventures would enjoy this.

Ron Chernow Shares Surprising Facts About George Washington

--Washington was the only major founder who lacked a college education. John Adams went to Harvard, James Madison to Princeton, and Alexander Hamilton to Columbia, making Washington self-conscious about what he called his “defective education.”

--Washington never had wooden teeth. He wore dentures that were made of either walrus or elephant ivory and were fitted with real human teeth. Over time, as the ivory got cracked and stained, it resembled the grain of wood. Washington may have purchased some of his teeth from his own slaves.

--Washington had a strangely cool and distant relationship with his mother. During the Revolutionary War and her son’s presidency, she never uttered a word of praise about him and she may even have been a Tory. No evidence exists that she ever visited George and Martha Washington at Mount Vernon. Late in the Revolutionary War, Mary Washington petitioned the Virginia legislature for financial relief, pleading poverty—and, by implication, neglect by her son. Washington, who had been extremely generous to his mother, was justly indignant.

--Even as a young man, Washington seemed to possess a magical immunity to bullets. In one early encounter in the French and Indian War, he absorbed four bullets in his coat and hat and had two horses shot from under him yet emerged unscathed. This led one Indian chief to predict that some higher power was guiding him to great events in the future.

--By age 30 Washington had survived smallpox, malaria, dysentery, and other diseases. Although he came from a family of short-lived men, he had an iron constitution and weathered many illnesses that would have killed a less robust man. He lived to the age of 67.

--While the Washingtons were childless—it has always been thought that George Washington was sterile—they presided over a household teeming with children. Martha had two children from her previous marriage and she and George later brought up two grandchildren as well, not to mention countless nieces and nephews.

--That Washington was childless proved a great boon to his career. Because he had no heirs, Americans didn’t worry that he might be tempted to establish a hereditary monarchy. And many religious Americans believed that God had deliberately deprived Washington of children so that he might serve as Father of His Country.

--Though he tried hard to be fair and took excellent medical care of his slaves, Washington could be a severe master. His diaries reveal that during one of the worst cold snaps on record in Virginia—when Washington himself found it too cold to ride outside—he had his field slaves out draining swamps and performing other arduous tasks.

--For all her anxiety about being constantly in a battle zone, Martha Washington spent a full half of the Revolutionary War with her husband—a major act of courage that has largely gone unnoticed.

--Washington was obsessed with his personal appearance, which extended to his personal guard during the war. Despite wartime austerity and a constant shortage of soldiers, he demanded that all members of his personal guard be between 5'8" and 5'10"; a year later, he narrowed the range to 5'9" to 5'10."

--While Washington lost more battles than he won, he still ranks as a great general. His greatness lay less in his battlefield brilliance—he committed some major strategic blunders—than in his ability to hold his ragged army intact for more than eight years, keeping the flame of revolution alive.

--Washington ran his own spy network during the war and was often the only one privy to the full scope of secret operations against the British. He anticipated many techniques of modern espionage, including the use of misinformation and double agents.

--Washington tended his place in history with extreme care. Even amid wartime stringency, he got Congress to appropriate special funds for a full-time team of secretaries who spent two years copying his wartime papers into beautiful ledgers.

--For thirty years, Washington maintained an extraordinary relationship with his slave and personal manservant William Lee, who accompanied him throughout the Revolutionary War and later worked in the presidential mansion. Lee was freed upon Washington’s death and given a special lifetime annuity.

--The battle of Yorktown proved the climactic battle of the revolution and the capstone of Washington’s military career, but he initially opposed this Franco-American operation against the British—a fact he later found hard to admit.

--Self-conscious about his dental problems, Washington maintained an air of extreme secrecy when corresponding with his dentist and never used such incriminating words as ‘teeth’ or ‘dentures.’ By the time he became president, Washington had only a single tooth left—a lonely lower left bicuspid that held his dentures in place.

--Washington always displayed extremely ambivalence about his fame. Very often, when he was traveling, he would rise early to sneak out of a town or enter it before he could be escorted by local dignitaries. He felt beleaguered by the social demands of his own renown.

--At Mount Vernon, Washington functioned as his own architect—and an extremely original one at that. All of the major features that we associate with the house—the wide piazza and colonnade overlooking the Potomac, the steeple and the weathervane with the dove of peace—were personally designed by Washington himself.

--A master showman with a brilliant sense of political stagecraft, Washington would disembark from his coach when he was about to enter a town then mount a white parade horse for maximum effect. It is not coincidental that there are so many fine equestrian statues of him.

--Land-rich and cash-poor, Washington had to borrow money to attend his own inauguration in New York City in 1789. He then had to borrow money again when he moved back to Virginia after two terms as president. His public life took a terrible toll on his finances.

--Martha Washington was never happy as First Lady—a term not yet in use—and wrote with regret after just six months of the experience: “I think I am more like a state prisoner than anything else...And as I cannot do as I like, I am obstinate and stay home a great deal.”

--When the temporary capital moved to Philadelphia in 1790, Washington brought six or seven slaves to the new presidential mansion. Under a Pennsylvania abolitionist law, slaves who stayed continuously in the state for six months were automatically free. To prevent this, Washington, secretly coached by his Attorney General, rotated his slaves in and out of the state without telling them the real reason for his actions.

--Washington nearly died twice during his first term in office, the first time from a tumor on his thigh that may have been from anthrax or an infection, the second time from pneumonia. Many associates blamed his sedentary life as president for the sudden decline in his formerly robust health and he began to exercise daily.

--Tired of the demands of public life, Washington never expected to serve even one term as president, much less two. He originally planned to serve for only a year or two, establish the legitimacy of the new government, then resign as president. Because of one crisis after another, however, he felt a hostage to the office and ended up serving two full terms. For all his success as president, Washington frequently felt trapped in the office.

--Exempt from attacks at the start of his presidency, Washington was viciously attacked in the press by his second term. His opponents accused him of everything from being an inept general to wanting to establish a monarchy. At one point, he said that not a single day had gone by that he hadn’t regretted staying on as president.

--Washington has the distinction of being the only president ever to lead an army in battle as commander-in-chief. During the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794, he personally journeyed to western Pennsylvania to take command of a large army raised to put down the protest against the excise tax on distilled spirits.

--Two of the favorite slaves of George and Martha Washington—Martha’s personal servant, Ona Judge and their chef Hercules—escaped to freedom at the end of Washington’s presidency. Washington employed the resources of the federal government to try to entrap Ona Judge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and return her forcibly to Virginia. His efforts failed.

--Washington stands out as the only founder who freed his slaves, at least the 124 who were under his personal control. (He couldn’t free the so-called ‘dower slaves’ who came with his marriage to Martha.) In his will, he stipulated that the action was to take effect only after Martha died so that she could still enjoy the income from those slaves.

--After her husband died, Martha grew terrified at the prospect that the 124 slaves scheduled to be freed after her death might try to speed up the timetable by killing her. Unnerved by the situation, she decided to free those slaves ahead of schedule only a year after her husband died.

--Like her husband, Martha Washington ended up with a deep dislike of Thomas Jefferson, whom she called “one of the most detestable of mankind.” When Jefferson visited her at Mount Vernon before he became president, Martha said that it was the second worst day of her life—the first being the day her husband died.

The Lee Miller section is good, but not very convincing

It is an interesting analysis of Riefenstahl's Gertrude Stein's, Lee Miller, and Janet Flanner's fascination with Hitler, and how they wove him into the structure and narratives of their own lives. Gertrude's Stein's relationship was somewhat ambivalent, even though she did promote him for the 1934 Nobel Peace Prize. As a Jew it didn't make very much sense but then most of her writing doesn't either. She's an esthete whose politics were very much shaded to the right, thanks to her close relationship with Bernard Fay, supporter of Petain and anti-Semite. She survived the War thanks to Fay and her attempts to get her translations of Petain's speeches published by Cerf in America. The Lee Miller section is good, but not very convincing. The Riefenstahl section was a rehash of the usual leftist line(ala Susan Sontag) and a lot of nonsense about cinematic semiology.. She has a very poor writing style, drenched as it is in feminist jargon. Still, I would say that it is an intelligent book and worth looking at. after you've read Pages, Rhiel's and O'Sickey's collection of essays in Riefenstahl Screened. Also read Barbara Will's book, Unlikely Collaborator's, which is a more in depth analysis of Stein's relationship to Bernard Fay and her support of Fascism. To be fair, the book says at the outset that it is only focusing on specific terms of the relationship between dictator and artist, so I can't fault her for paring down her information. My problem with the book is that I find that most feminist prose to be off-putting, though they do have a perspective worth reading. Interesting ,though, how she doesn't spend much time discussing Lee Miller's relationship to her father, who took countless nude photos of her form childhood on. He seemed to me to be the ultimate patriarchal tyrant.

WOW!!!! This book has left me speechless. This is the third book by Tamara Mataya that I have read and it by far my favorite. Her writing has improved so much since that first book of hers that I read.

This book was so different from her other books. She decided to write a story about a subject that many find to be taboo…..BDSM. I thought she did a fabulous job with this storyline. She was able to make this story and characters feel real and relatable. You can really tell that she did her research on this subject to make this book seem and feel authentic to the reader. I loved that she told this story in dual POV, because I thought it was totally beneficial to read what both Sloane and Darko were feeling and thinking. This book was very tastefully written. I have read many BDSM type stories and some have made me squeamish while reading it and some I thought were just too tame to be consider in this genre of book, but I thought Tamara did an excellent job finding that middle ground. I thought she captured the BDSM world accurately but without being overly graphic just to push the readers limits.

This book was so much more than just a BDSM and love story. This was truly a journey of self discovery and acceptance for Sloane, who just so happens to fall in love with a Dom along the way ;) Sloane is a woman who has to have control in every aspect of her life….love, work and family. So when her twin sister comes to her and tells her that she has this different lifestyle, Sloane reacts poorly and is set out to show her sister what a bad world BDSM really is. But what she finds along the way is that she is more a part of that world than she would've ever guessed. I don't want to tell you everything that happens, but trust me you will want to follow Sloane on this wonderful journey. I think a lot of readers will be able to connect to this story on a personal level.

As for Darko (I know weird name, but she explains it in the book)…..he is amazing!!! I fell for him hook, line and sinker. He is a wonderful Dom but also a sweet man underneath. I think that is why I loved this book so much….the author didn't make Darko out to be that overbearing Dom, who you just hate because he is just mean. I thought she hit the nail on the head with Darko. He was the best combination between Dom and gentleman.

I liked all the secondary characters, but none that completely stuck out to me. I know I would be happy to read books about some of the other Doms/subs from the club. We do get a sneak peek of the next standalone in this series….Take Me. I am truly looking forward to that book….I am excited to see where she takes the next story.

I would 100% recommend this book to everyone. If you are a fan of BDSM, I think this is a great book to read, but even if you aren't, I still think this is read you should try. None of the BDSM scenes are overly graphic, so you won't be left squirming while reading this story. This was a great story about learning to love yourself and be true to who we really are.

Make Me (The Submission Games Book 1) is the first story in the brand new series by Tamara Mataya. It needs to stated first and foremost that while this book tackles a genre that is hugely popular, during a time where anyone and everyone is discussing the hugely popular 50 Shades of Grey, this story is a complete departure from the above named series.
Make Me blazes its' own path. Refreshing during a time when everyone is attempting to breathe new life into a hugely popular and now mainstream, before considered taboo subject, the lifestyle of BDSM.

Mataya's style of writing is unique, a fact that becomes abundantly clear to the reader within the very earliest pages of this novel. She plots meticulously, the scenes are crafted with care, and gives us such spectacular characters that you can't help but be drawn into their story. Gone is the wimpy, whiney female character that are quite happy to allow a handsome, strong male character, to swoop in, save the day and sweep her of feet. Sloan is not only fierce in her loyalty to those she loves, but also uncompromising in her values and beliefs and more than a lot stubborn . She's dedicated to her profession and the pursuit of truth. Being a journalist who has seen her fair share of brutality and fallen victim to it in the past, she doesn't shy away from darker more challenging stories that most would turn tail and run away from.

When she discovers that her previously troubled twin sister, Tessa has been experimenting with kink, and fallen off the map, not responding to calls, emails or texts, she becomes hell bent on uncovering the truth behind her sister's disappearance. She devises a plan, she'll infiltrate the notoriously, secret underground BDSM club, The Underground, expose leaders and members for what she believes them to truly be, abusers, praying on innocents and the weak, naive people unwilling to see them for what the truly are.

However what Sloan could never have anticipated or planned for is Darko Aralica, a dominant who's skill is closely coveted by those submissive lucky enough to spend any length of time under his hand, rope or crop. From the moment Sloan meets Darko, her every preconception of The Underground is tested.

They will invoke curiosity and make you re-think all that you thought you knew. It's a love story that is incredibly addictive, decadent and sexy, heartfelt and emotional, layered for optimal feels. There's truly something to be said about an author who can make you change your view on something. For me, it was Tamara Mataya and BDSM. When I first read MAKE ME, my experience and "knowledge" (this word is used loosely) was based on the 50 Shades trilogy. It's safe to say I was ill-informed. (Note: Though I did love 50 shades, I am well aware that reality and fiction are two very different things, and the reality of the BDSM community was not properly represented in these particular works of fiction.)

MAKE ME did just that . . . it made me open my eyes to a world I knew nothing about. As Sloane learned her way through the lifestyle, so did I. As her mind opened, and her preconceived notions began to fall away, so did mine. I fell in love with Darko as Sloane did, fell in love with the beauty that can be found in a true, caring Dom/sub relationship, fell in love with this story that Mataya artfully crafted.

I've read everything Tamara Matyaya has written, and I can say that without a doubt, this was the series she was born to write. The way she painted the scenes, formed the characters, bled onto the pages of MAKE ME . . . well, this is a book I will read over and over again. And dammit, Tessa's story in TAKE ME can't get here fast enough.

I highly recommend MAKE ME to anyone who loves a sexy, sultry love story. Because that's what this is. A love story. And an epic one at that.

About the Author
William Addis is a consulting engineer at Buro Happold in London and the author of numerous books, academic papers, and book reviews on construction history published over the past 25 years. He holds a doctorate degree in the history and philosophy of engineering from the University of Reading, where he taught this subject for 15 years; he has also delivered lecture courses on engineering history at Cambridge University, the University of Bath, and University College, London. In 1998, he helped curate the exhibition "The Art of the Engineer" at the Pompidou Centre in Paris and contributed to the book that accompanied the exhibition. Addis is an active member of the Institution of Structural Engineers' History Study Group and lectures at professional conferences around the world.

An amazingly comprehensive effort!

The author deserves a ton of credit for the huge amount of work that must have gone into compiling all of the information and images in this book, and putting them into an enjoyable and readable text.
I was hoping (in something as sweeping as this) to come across some sort of exposition about what brought about various developments in design engineering and construction - what was behind a shift from one mode to the next. The book touches lightly on this subject occasionally, but that's about it. And there was no false advertising there, just wishful thinking on my part - no fault to the author or the book.
I suppose it is up to the reader to reflect, which is a gift in itself!

Chris Thomas and Christopher Shores are recognised as the UK's leading authorities on British and Commonwealth air power during World War 2 and are authors of several leading works on the subject including landmark studies of the Hawker Typhoon and Tempest and works on the air war over North Africa and the Mediterranean. Christopher Shores' 1970 study of 2nd TAF is now a highly collectable and sought after volume and is the only work of its kind.

This book is the 2nd in a multi volume set documenting the history of the Royal Air Force (RAF) 2nd Tactical Air Force. The authors did a breath taking job of research and documentation concening the activities of the RAF 2nd TAF during this time period. The photographs included in the book are also excellent. This book will be of interest to avaiation, World War II, and RAF historians. An excellent resource book and one that will stand the test of time.

Superb History for Fans of Royal Air Force or Ground Attack

This is volume 2 in a three volume set on the 2nd Tactical Air Force, which was so important in supporting Allied ground advances following the Normany invasion in ground attack. These are large volumes with a quality binding and excellent artwork, which one comes to expect from Classic Publications. Though the price is hefty, especially for all three volumes, the coverage is excellent, including unusual color profiles, detailed coverage of Tempests, Typhoons, Spitfires, and Mustangs. Sections on "Tank Busters or Morale Busters" and "Who Got Rommel" are particularly interesting. Although there are excellent details on maps and airfields and daily losses, readers of the other two volumes will miss the solid order of battle information present in volumes 1 and 3. Readers of the Osprey aircraft series will find new information here and a wonderful level of detail.

SAM HOLCROFT is English but was educated at Edinburgh University, where she joined the Traverse Theatre's Young Writers' Group (2003-5) and was nominated by them for the Royal Court/BBC scheme 'The Fifty'. A short play, Vogue, was seen at the Royal Court Theatre in their Angry Now season in 2006 and Ned & Sharon at the 2007 High Tide Festival. Her London Street Sauna will be staged by the Traverse in 2009. She now lives in London.
