About the Author

Frank van der Linden has worked at Philips Medical Systems in The Netherlands since 1999 and been involved with software product lines since then. He was program chair of a series of five workshops on product line engineering, is a member of the steering committee of the SPLC conferences, and co-authored "Software Product Line Engineering" published by Springer in 2005.

Klaus Schmid is professor for software engineering at the University of Hildesheim, Germany. Previously, he was department head for requirements engineering and usability engineering at the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE) in Kaiserslautern, Germany. He has been involved in numerous research and industrial projects in product line engineering.

Eelco Rommes worked at Philips Research in the area of software architecture for medical systems from 2001 to 2006. During that time he was involved in several research projects and he has published on software product lines and related topics.

Excellent reference on Software Product lines

This book is an excellent reference on software product lines. This book provides detailed information on the subject. Subjects like variability management, Architecture, Architecture requirements are very well written. There is a limited coverage of Service oriented architecture (SOA), Business Process Management (BPM) and Domain Specific languages (DSL). I hope the next edition of this book will look into Software Product lines and Service oriented Architecture in sufficient detail. Industrilizing Services development is slowly picking up and should be considered.

Good Cheap Communications Book, Glad I Majored Elsewhere

As a required textbook for a communications course I can greatly appreciate the fact that this book was not very expensive and in fact that is the main reason why I am rating it as high as I am. If you are looking for a book that talks primarily about invitational rhetoric and applications thereof with some of the general nuts and bolts of general communication and speech this is a good book. If you can't stand the soft sciences or cultural relativism or social justice you will be rolling your eyes every other paragraph and especially during personal examples. I reiterate though it is a decent text if you can get over framing of the authors opinions in the context of rhetorical teachings. It accomplishes what it needs to at low cost with only minorly annoying issues so all in all its pretty decent.

Excellent content

Excellent content, but a bit dry and academic in writing style. I will definitely implement some of the knowledge I gained, but it was a chore getting through it. There really is gold between these covers, but it's hard work mining it. If I were to speak as turgidly as the writing in the book, I don't think most audiences would return, which would be a real shame. This is probably due to my own bias and preferences, but it will probably also affect other readers. This is the ADHD era, and it's an issue that must be dealt with. It might do better as an audio book. I had to force myself to finish it, even though I knew it was valuable material.

Great, but not compatible with all Kindle models

The book is great, but buyer beware - I bought this thinking I could view it on my Kindle Keyboard (which is less than 3 years old). It is NOT compatible with that model of Kindle, which is stated nowhere clearly. I ended up spending an hour on the phone with Amazon, which was helpful but overall very frustrating.

About the Author
Zahid Amjad received his BSc in Chemistry (Honors) and MSc in Chemistry from the University of the Panjab, Pakistan, and PhD from Glasgow University, Scotland, United Kingdom. He was a lecturer at the Institute of Chemistry of Panjab University and served as an assistant research professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo, New York. He started his professional career as an R & D scientist. During his more than 30 years at Calgon Corporation, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Lubrizol Advanced Materials, Inc., Cleveland, Ohio, he has worked in various fields, including water treatment, water purification, cosmetics, home care, oral care, and pharmaceutics, and related fields.
Dr. Amjad has presented numerous invited lectures and participated in symposiums around the world. He has published more than 200 papers, has contributed to numerous book chapters, has edited seven books, and holds 30 US patents. His awards include Induction into the National Hall of Corporate Inventors, EDI Innovation Award, and the recipient of the Association of the Water Technologies’ Ray Baum Memorial Water Technologist of the Year Award.
Dr. Amjad is a member of several societies and has organized several symposiums on crystal growth formation and inhibition, physico-chemical processes at solid-liquid interface, adsorption, desorption, and dispersion. He is the owner of Aqua Science and Technology LLC, Columbus, Ohio, which provides consulting services for industrial water treatment, separation processes, and related technologies. Dr. Amjad currently serves as a visiting professor in the School of Arts and Sciences, Walsh University, North Canton, Ohio.

Kostas Demadis was born in Komotini (Thrace, Northern Greece) in 1967. He received his Bachelors Degree from the University of Athens, Greece in 1990 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Michigan, USA in 1995. His Ph.D. theme was in bioinorganic chemistry (structural and functional modeling of the active site of nitrogenase enzyme). He then moved to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC) for post-doctoral, working on the intricacies of Osmium chemistry. In 1998, he was hired by Nalco Chemical Company as a Senior Chemist in their Research & Development Division, switching research gears and “entering” the water treatment world.
In 2003 Kostas started his appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry, University of Crete, in his homeland Greece. He created the Crystal Engineering, Growth & Design Laboratory. Kostas is currently Professor of Chemistry.
Kostas’ research group is interested in a number of projects. Metal phosphonate chemistry (synthesis, characterization and application of metal phosphonate materials), functional hybrid materials, silicon chemistry (modeling of biosilicification mechanisms), water treatment issues (mineral scale inhibition, corrosion control, metal ion absorption), controlled release of active ingredients (in particular phosphonate-based drugs), green chemistry.

Logical Conclusion, Logically Arrived At...

For me, the best thing about picking up almost any 'non-fiction' book by Isaac Asimov is the fore-knowledge that you aren't going to be affronted by a barrage of technical "facts and figures," simply thrown out of nowhere at the reader (like 'name-dropping'), for the purpose of advancing, in a self-serving way, the author's own 'pet theories' on a given subject. With Asimov, you KNOW he will walk you through everything, from start through finish, in chronological sequence and with historical context thrown in (free of charge, always), in order to build his case for something in a methodical, well-ordered, and logical manner. I've sometimes thought the 'Good Doctor' was himself surprised at some of the conclusions he 'found himself arriving at', on certain subjects, simply because the 'weight of the evidence' and his own 'chain of reasoning' from it, simply LED him there, compelling him to adopt that viewpoint, not unlike the outcome of a rigorous mathematical formula... Then again...I suppose that goes for everyone! But for rational reasons! (There IS a distinction!) 'Extraterrestrial Civilizations' is a brave and fascinating book. Brave, in its scope, for a book originally published 20 years ago, before we had our present-day scientific confirmation that other stars do, in fact, HAVE planets (which was assumed by the majority of the scientific community, but not known, 20 years ago - no 'Hubble Telescope' existed back then, when Asimov wrote this book). Our recent findings, however, both vindicate and bolster two (and ONLY two) of Isaac's most crucial case-assumptions in this book, along with other scientist's conjectures-, early on in his 'chain of reasoning'). The book is Fascinating, in that the theories Asimov both summarizes and expounds still represent the 'cutting edge' of the best scientific thought there is on this subject today. We have, as yet, progressed no further. Cover-to-cover, and detailed step-by-step, this book builds up an argument based upon the well-known and meticulous Asimovian 'chain of reasoning'. It incorporates (though significantly modifies it, since Asimov doesn't seem to accept the narrowed parameters) the 'Drake Equation', which is a 'sign of the times' (1979 times 'best science'). It's too bad the subsequent 'conclusion' is given away on the soft-cover jacket (at least on the Avon Books edition, which I have), because the book itself reads and unfolds like the best of detective stories, with the facts presented (which progressively fall into place), and, chapter by chapter, the 'clues' and suppositions mount, then pile up, one upon another...ultimately leading to... ? Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in 'exobiology'(You know...the 'science without a subject'...yet). Aspects of almost every related science discipline are considered here (or at least are mentioned in passing), along with inherent implications/applications. A 'complete' work ('in progress'), until someone else comes along and 'updates' us, or suggests something different or more 'progressive'. So far, everyone's still waiting....

A great read, even 25 years later

I found this book at a used bookstore, and having just finished Foundation, I thought I'd dive into a non-fiction book by Asimov. I have always admired Asimov's brilliant and lucid writing style, and his other non-fiction works are wonderful (particularly Understanding Physics, which is an outstanding treatment of the standard physics canon). In Extraterrestrial Civilizations, Asimov steps readers through a series of observations about the development of intelligent life here on Earth, and he extrapolates the data we have about ourselves into the question of whether or not intelligent life is probable somewhere in the rest of the Universe. I was concerned that a 25-year old book on the topic might feel antiquated--especially considering the advancement of astronomy in general and the data from the Hubble telescope in particular--but as with much of Asimov's work, his ideas are as fresh today as they were in 1979. To be sure, he does make some statements that aren't true today or that have been modified (i.e., he states that we have no direct evidence of planets around other stars, and he also says that neutrinos have zero mass), but he is also careful to comment frequently that "this could change at any moment, even tomorrow." His conclusions are quite interesting, and I was captivated by his "storytelling of the Universe" as well as by his commentary about why we know what we do. If you want a primer on "who might be out there," buy this book.

This book was written about 20 years ago. Asimov's scientific rigour and marvelouly clear divulgative prose guides us to what we know of the possible existence of extraterrestrial civilizations. Had he written this book today, he would have been less optimistic, perhaps, but most of his reasoning wouldn't have changed. For an updated equivalent of this book,read

About the Author
Pema Chödrön is an American Buddhist nun in the lineage of Chögyam Trungpa. She is resident teacher at Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia, the first Tibetan monastery in North America established for Westerners. She is the author of many books and audiobooks, including the best-selling When Things Fall Apart and Don't Bite the Hook.

Simple, easy to follow instructions

Written in everyday language, for the most part. The author gives easy to follow instructions for catching ourselves getting dragged into drama by the stories that fuel our emotions. While the instructions are easy, making ourselves do them is the biggest challenge because the urge to give into the drama is tempting. Her simple steps of - pausing, noticing that urge, shifting our attention to our breath, allowing the emotion to wash over and through us, letting it go, continuing with whatever is right in front of us in the next moment - have the power to release us from self-imposed suffering. Some say pain is unavoidable but suffering is what we do to ourselves when we want what is happening to not be happening. The author lets us know that the life span of an emotion - the time it takes to move into and through us - is one and a half minutes. If it stays longer than that it's because we have trapped it inside ourselves by refusing to shift our attention away from the mind chatter that is fueling it.

Must read for troubled souls....

Indispensable knowledge. A must read for anyone who exhibits self sabatoge, abides in self hate, finds it easy to blame others, cannot seem to human right.
Our conflicts are trivial when we step back and allow love in. Soften your heart, rather than harden, become compassion rather than hate. We all have this ability. I find plant sacrament to be of the biggest tool to actuate this teaching. I am a lay Buddhist who has taken the precepts and practices Vajrasattva as a means to liberate myself. I've also read the Tibetan Book of The Dead- as well as the Psychedelic Experience - modeled after The Tibetan Book of The Dead, a model for allowing your less desirable attributes to die during a psychedelic experience, giving way to the rebirth of your true self. The you you know you are and struggle to become.

If we practice compassion to ourselves and sit with the energies and emotions of shenpa, we can learn to feel our oneness with all the world. By not getting hooked by whatever small event that slights or angers us, we increase our spiritual courage to stay open and connect with others through our awareness that we all struggle with the same feelings. Our practice with the small painful events helps prepare us for times when major life changes, such as betrayal or death of a loved one occur.I have started to say to myself when difficulties happen, "Don't let the shenpa get you down! As one grows in loving kindness and stays more open to the challenges of life, Chodron teaches about tonglen, a spiritual practice that helps us to be part of the solution to our world's problems. I have read the book twice so far and read parts of it daily. It is an inspiration to me for handling life's difficulties in a way that brings compassion for myself and others.
