A great new addition to the angel/nephilim genre. Plus Nova is a butt kicker!

I do have a thing for urban fantasy books with angels. So when this book came up for review, I raised my hand to read it. I’m glad I did.

Nova is a human. Or should I say was a human. Out of a chance of fate, she was changed into nephilim, a being of angel and human descent. With the help from Ben, Zeph, Ransom, and other nephilim, they are trying to help her figure out how and why she is changing. What she doesn’t know is that there is another group of nephilim, Ibira Corp, who wants to study her to find out why she was able to be changed. Now she’s in a struggle for her life and freedom.

The story has a little sci-fi twist with genetics. While I normally suspend reality in urban fantasy/paranormal stories, the genetics gave it plausibility to it. The story was action packed. Plus we have nephilim with abilities! No two abilities are alike. We meet some interesting characters. There are people who can cure illness, take pain away, freeze you, fly, and be able to control you with their voice. There are many more, both interesting and terrifying. It had an X-men vibe to it. Nova was a great character. She is strong, smart and sassy. She’s a fighter. While the book did have some romance in it, it was light side. Ben is swoon worthy guy. His abilities have caused him to distance himself from others. Nova does an incredible job acquiring his trust and being patient for him.

Overall, the book is solid. It’s a new take on the angel genre. The end has a little cliff hanger, and the version I read had a sneak peek of the next book, Nephilim Code- Edward. I couldn’t help myself and had to read it. I will be signing up for updates for this series as well as pre-order the next book when available.

A great combination of action, humor, intrigue, good vs. evil, and a wee bit of romance

Nova Quinn is a smart, sassy, fearless young woman with her eye constantly searching for the perfect shot to be photographed. One night on the roof of her apartment, minding her own business with her camera in hand, she hears a disturbance and starts taking pictures. No way did she just see two men fly up into the air...What the heck just happened, and why is her strange but handsome new neighbor one of them that disappeared like a shot into the night sky?

Ever curious Nova sets out to meet her new neighbors to get answers. When a chance introduction with her roommate's new love interest makes her sick, only the new neighbors can help Nova deal with what is happening to her.

Zeph and Ben Angelis are brothers and Nephilim. Only other Nephilim can see each other's powers and abilities so why is it that Nova can see what they are? As in any society there are good and evil, having a human see what they are makes Nova dangerous and wanted. Her human side is dying and now they need to get to the bottom of what her new powers may be.

First off, we love stories involving Angels/Nephilim etc. Nova did not disappoint. There is a great combination of action, humor, intrigue, good vs. evil, and a wee bit of romance brewing through this easy to read and follow story. Nova is strong and fearless, Zeph and Ben (even Julius) are dreamy while each dealing with their powers differently. Every character we meet are well written and described without being overloaded with dialogue. We are super excited to continue this journey and pick up Book 2: Edward, when it is available. 4.5 Sighs

Cliffhanger

The story was good and I would give it a better rating but I have a few issues. It needs an editor, my grammar is not that great and even I picked up on this. I had no idea what country it was set in other than it was not the US until the very end when you find out she is returning to Melbourn. I think books that end in cliffhangers should have advanced warning. It is a cheap sales gimmic and I have no respect for authors who do this.

About the Author
An eminent media and communications expert, Keval J. Kumar is the founder-director of RECMER (the Resource Centre for Media Education and Research), Rune, as well as a Visiting Faculty at MICA (Mudra Institute of Communication), ISB&M (International School of Business and Media), and Indira School of Communication.

He has authored seven books, including Media Education, Communication, and Public Policy: An Indian Perspective, and The Complete Guide to Mass Communication.

He earned his doctorate in Mass Communication from the University of Leicester, UK, and has taught at several institutions including, Ohio State University, USA, Jacobs University, Bremen, Germany, Bahrain Training Institute, Manama, and Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication, where he was also the Director. He was the Chief Advisor to the 'Media Studies' committee formed for NCERT's syllabus and textbooks, and many of his articles have been published in academic journals and books on Communication. An Associate Member of ORBICOM, the Association of UNESCO Chairs in Communication, he also Chaired the Media Education Research Section, International Association of Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), from 1998 to 2006.

The perfect Mother's Day gift

This is such a readable book. I just bought three copies for my mom and sister and mother-in-law. The perfect Mother's Day gift. There are so many amazing stories. It's not all about gossip either. There's a story about 9/11 and how there was a barbecue planned at the White House and there were so many tables and chairs set out for the event. Since the White House was a target, they had to evacuate all of the staff. People were running out of the White House to safety. They were terrified, as I would be too! One of the staff members was so busy working downstairs at his job that he didn't hear the Secret Service evacuating everyone. He came upstairs and wondered where everyone had gone. Meanwhile the head chef and head usher decided to stay on the grounds of the WH and take down all of those chairs and tables because if they didn't do it no one else would. They spent all morning during 9/11 doing their duties.

What's really incredible about this book is the dedication and service these men and women have made to serving not just the first families, but the institution of the White House. There are some families who have generations of family members who have served there. One family had like 5 or 6 family members working at the White House. They all loved and honored the traditions there and they all served no matter who got elected.

One other thing I loved: You don't realize it until you read just how complicated it is for the first family to move into the White House. One family moves out with moving trucks, while the new family moves in -- all while the inauguration is taking place. It's so cool. I love this book and recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the presidency or the institution of the WH.

A Redundant Not Reveal All

Several reviewers who didn't really care for this book have commented that if one has never before read a "White House book" then this would probably be a good one for them. Well, I am one of these first timers and I wasn't all that impressed either. The writing is rather repetitive. The theme of the staff's loyalty and selflessness runs very heavily throughout every single anecdote. I realize that the author and the staff are trying to balance a fine line of remaining respectful to the first families while also striving to provide enough detail to catch the readers' attention, but I found the writing to be dry and the saintliness of the staff to be a smidgeon tiresome. Really, the book suffers from a lack of true character development, whether with the members of the first families or the White House maids and butlers (yes, even biographies benefit from character development), with the possible exception of the LBJ coverage, which provided some of the most interesting material in the book. This book wasn't quite the page turner I had hoped it would be.

I loved this book

I loved this book. The Residence gives the reader a real sense of the people who support the families that live in the White House. It is a fascinating glimpse into life in the White House and the people who inhabit it. Although the interviewees confidentiality prevented them from revealing too much, there is just enough scintillating stories to make this book a great read.
There are stories about the Kennedy's, hilarious stories about Johnson, of course the Clintons, and Bushes. What I found interesting were that my political views aside these people were kind and caring to the staff, so I felt like I got to see them as human beings and not just politicians with an agenda.
Learning about the staff was as interesting as learning about the first families. Some of these people were second and third generation. They served from a true place of service. They were extraordinary people whose commitment was incredibly inspiring.

Need this book? Here it is!

I'm sure this is a wonderful Psychology book full of all of the lovely things the medical model has to offer BUT I didn't end up needing it. I didn't even open it. Although, if you are required by your professor, who is not as cool as mine was, you might want to consider renting this book from Amazon because it's pretty inexpensive compared to college prices. Also, the shipping is quick. Make sure you keep the box it comes in because when you're ready to return it, just print a shipping label (free!) and send it all back to Amazonland. Yes, it's really that easy.

Great read and introduction to Mr. Kadrey

I had read this before when Mr. Kadrey had written it a while ago on a blog, but as he told me on facebook this is a much tighter cleaned up version and it shows. For a buck, you cannot get much better than a story told by Mr. Kadrey, his Sandman Slim series being one of my favorites, this one takes on the role of an up and coming serial killer in search of the mythical "master" serial killer. Lots of good dialog and some interesting ideas and twists make up a fine short story to share with any thriller, murder mystery, or serial killer novel lover. IF you enjoy this and how Mr. Kadrey writes his characters and dialog, I highly suggest checking out the first Sandman Slim novel, or his Butcher Bird novel. Story and Value, love it!

Nobody Rides for Free

A departure - but not so much - for Kadrey, "Suspect Zero" will appeal to his legions of Sandman Slim fans who just can't get enough of the damned and the bewildered who cling to them. It's like all of Kadrey's friends come from some kind of underworld slum, and he can't get away from them even by changing his address.

"Suspect Zero" is a short story with all of Kadrey's trademark violent hoodo, but which stands outside the Sandman Slim universe. Don't worry - this universe has a Hell in it, and the characters in this story know it well. A young punk looking to make his name seeks out the baddest of the bad - and discovers he has no idea what he's in for. But the bad have a heart on them, too, and, if the kid can't escape his destiny, they can ease the road for him, just a little.

Just read it.

Teeth, not much bite.

I'm rather a fan of Kadrey's Sandman Slim, and this story had some things in common with those books. Plenty of violence, plenty of opportunities to arch an eyebrow and say, "Eeesh," and plenty of mythological/ theological references. It lacks the meaty-ness of Sandman Slim, possibly because it's a short story and doesn't have room for much development. I left it feeling like it was the beginnings of a good idea that had been padded out with some stilted blood-n-guts filler...kind of like the beginnings of a good stew that the cook can't figure out what to do with, so they throw in a bunch of potatoes and too much salt. Comes off as promising, but in the end a bit too bland and off-flavor. Maybe someday Kadrey will develop this character and his mythos more - I'd like to see that. For now, it's a slightly-above-average cross country slasher story.
