The Best Star Wars Book I've Ever Read

Honestly, that just about says it all too.

This book is FAR superior both in tone and subject to so many of the other Star Wars books. There are indeed some EXCELLENT books out there (mostly I'm thinking of the Admiral Thrawn trilogy), but this one is as good as all three of those packed into a single tome. Yes, it's THAT good.

This book covers the construction of the first Death Star, from the point of view of one of the tens of thousands of mechanics who worked on it. It's done amazingly well--you really get to know the characters and towards the end you're hoping that your favorites will be able to get off the ship before the Battle of Yavin in the original Star Wars movie. The workers all hear bits and pieces of what's gong on of course, and when the attack comes there's a lot of confusion, "I told you so's!", and the like.

I can't say much more without spoiling the book, though of course any Star Wars fan knows how it ends. I would LOVE to see a sequel concerning the second Death Star!

Get this book if you're a fan of good science fiction, a Star Wars aficionado, and/or want a science fiction novel that has a bit different slant than most. HIGHLY recommended.

Imagination

I was curious about how an monstrous thing like the death star would strain a writer's imagination. What the absurdly vast challenges of such an undertaking would be even for a cruel empire.
I thought of the financing, building materials, workers' housing, logistic. How the enormous energy consumption would be addressed. How to even have a clear picture of the swarms of problems that would arise. How would one build an internal transport system that would enable people to go to other regions fast. What kind of challenges a person would face finding his way through this maze the size of a small country. What kind of summaries of summaries the chief engineers would base their decisions on. This kind of construction is indeed a strain of the imagination and sadly the writer didn't deliver that.

Good concept, moderate execution

Death Star does a good job of introducing some charming non-canon characters into a canon universe. I found Ratua in particular was well written and interesting. The author does a good job of humanizing individuals within the Empire and offering first person perspectives in cameo appearances of some of the best villians of the original series while managing to cloak the fledgling rebellion in a kind of optomistic cloud of mystery promising a better life. The idea fit in very well with the emotions I felt during A New Hope.

However, every female character in the book with the exception of Leia, despite being smart, accomplished, confident, and capable women, are reduced to little more that giddy and diminished sex objects. Daala was the most grievously offended character. The author had to constantly repeat how she was a capable commander who could have been the first female general entirely in her own right without help frmo Tarkin just to try and rationalize her every apearance in a bathrobe, fresh from sex. (no, adolescent boys, there are no love scenes)

The women were very disappointing and let down the whole book for me. I enjoyed seeing some of my favorite canon scenes from New Hope from Darth Vader's perpective, however, I couldn't shake the feeling there was too much left of Anakin Skywalker, the whiny, arrogant, self righteous annoyance that cemented a ruined reputation for Lucas. His motivation felt entirely wrong as compared to the Darth we all know and love from the original trilogy.

Overall, however, I did enjoy the book. It read smoothly and left me constantly looking forward to the next chapter, anxiously awaiting the resolution of each character.

About the Author
Travis Elborough has been a freelance writer, author and cultural commentator for more than a decade now. His book include The Bus We Loved, a history of the Routemaster bus;The Long Player Goodbye, a hymn to vinyl records; and Wish You Were Here, a survey of the British beside the seaside. Elborough is a regular contributor to the Observer and the Guardian but has written for the Times, Sunday Times, New Statesman, the Oldie, TATE etc., BBC History magazine and Kinfolk among others and frequently appears on BBC Radio 4 and Five Live.Alan Horsfield has over thirty years' experience as a cartographer. Having started his career at the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain, he has created artwork for many publications, most recently as chief cartographer for Reader's Digest World Atlas. Alan lives in Hampshire with his wife and three children.

Great book for the curious ages 9-100

VERY cool book. Kids as well as adults will be intrigued by it. My 12 year old daughter has read it twice and taken it to school to show friends. My husband read it and decided we needed to go on a trip to see some of these places. My 9 year old son and I read it together and he has decided to find and submit some places that they missed for the next revision.

I'm a map freak. There are some interesting things in this book, but overall a bit disappointing. Yes, the places are improbable, but the writing is a bit pedestrian and the book has no (metaphorical) spine beyond random, improbable places.

This book raises eyebrows

The author says that he wants to write a definitive textbook about Information Systems; and also says that the book is for serious students. Wow. In a field where one can find hundreds (if not thousands and tens of thousands) of books bearing these two words information systems in their titles, this is quite a claim (even if one ignores the obvious question about the many IS textbooks being used today: are they for serious students?) Well, I agree with the author. Folks who are searching for a book with it to study IS for real can stop the search right here and now.

This book builds IS around a powerful concept: the connection of people and resources for innovation. It uses the notion of human value networks to substantiate the usual ideas of connection and innovation - and give these otherwise platitudinous words uniquely refreshing content. On this basis, the other two common words, people and resources, become naturally the objects and subjects of design for building the connections and pursuing the innovations - i.e., the design of information systems. From here, the book develops the basic concept of IS (covering both application and scientific), the stragetic planning of IS, and the system analysis and database design of IS; which are standard topics to the IS field. However, the twist here is that, while meeting the standard requirements of IS courses, it develops these traditional topics in an interesting new global framework characterized by systems of IS and sustainability of IS. The book also combines the emerging network science and service science to explain how IS connects and innovates for the knowledge-based economies. The last chapter connects the science of IS to micro-economics with an anchor in production functions. Every chapter includes many exercises and cases throughout, which add considerable value to the book for the reader, and make it a textbook suitable for self-study as well as for classroom teaching.

More ricklets, bigger and better

Wow, wonder ricklets this time! Craze's adventures continue, the new tavern, his need to prove himself worthy, his weird and wonderful associates and trusted friends... Well done, M. Pax. Book 3 of your series is certainly not a disappointment. I am left to wonder if Craze will ever achieve his goals.
Just when the dust settles on Pardeep, the Lepper opens up and tourists flock in, Craze has yet another hurdle to leap. His family. The very people who betrayed him on his home planet, kicked him out.
Word has spread that Craze is a success, and now he's besieged by his own people who have nowhere else to go.
But that's all I dare say.
If you haven't read any of the Backworlds series, please do so now.
Entertaining, easy reads. Characters are more fleshed-out, pacing is great.
Keep the series coming, please, M. Pax. I await book 4.

Sci-Fi with Heart, Humor and Imagination

In Boomtown Craze, Craze has grown from being a Candide-esque innocent to a lovable, but sharp realist. Plenty of bad things still happen to him: his tavern tables get delivered in all the wrong colors, his obnoxious, user family arrives just as he is finally making it big in the tourist trade; yet Craze has learned how to play hard. He has grown quite suave with women. For instance, he's able to make a strategic decision to forgo seducing the young lady of his choice in order to flatter and charm that girl's mother, who has planetary power and a massive crop of Wonder Ricklets, a sort of small bovine type herd that he wants in on. I enjoyed the scenes where we get glimpses of his sexual charm. One of the women is a Sprinkler, a blue-hued race that sloughs off mist and a continual drizzle that, on this dry and dusty moon of Pardeep definitely has its benefits!
I love Pax's inventive side: the way the characters' hair curls and swirls and has its very own life; the beautiful yet toxic plants of Photwit and the nanite-laced chocolates that one can control a subject's mind with when offered as a treat. M Pax has true imagination and humor, and the prose just keeps getting better and better. I'm a fan.

Another great entry in the Backworlds series

The Backworlds series gets better and better with each book. I love the way the character of Craze has grown and developed through the series, he's become quite a charmer here and a fun companion to have as we journey through the Backworlds.

As always I am in awe of Pax's imagination. You have to love the Wonder Ricklets! I am anxiously awaiting the release of Book 4 in a few months.
