If you like or love this series it is worth the money to read

I'm a huge James Patterson fan in general, but not a graphic novel woman usually. My husband picked this up for me for Christmas and I was not terribly impressed when I first saw it. However, I love the Daniel X series and this was a new one. Once I opened it I was enthralled. It's well written, as is everything Mr. Patterson does and the graphic pictures are fantastic. I hope he does several more of these.

Good Introduction to Daniel X

James Patterson has exploded into the YA market over the last few years. The thing I noticed, though, is that all of his YA books have secondary authors. This time it is Leopoldo Gout. This pair of writers put together a pretty good story.

The back story is this: Daniel X is a humanoid alien whose race is dedicated to hunting down and killing evil aliens. Daniel's parents were killed by one when he was younger. One who was at the top of a list of the most dangerous aliens on Earth. Daniel escaped and later returned to find the list. Now he is dedicated to hunting down all the aliens on the list, setting as his ultimate goal, killing the alien who killed his parents.

Daniel has some cool powers. He can shape change. He can create real objects with the power of his mind. This includes people. It is kind of weird.

In this story Daniel is hunting down "Number Six." To do so, Daniel decides to make contact with and befriend Number Six's son. Weirdly enough, the son looks human. The father does not. The son is willing to help as he dislikes what his father is doing: setting up alien hunts here on Earth, with not a care for the collateral damage this causes.

The story is action packed, but not to the point of mindlessness. It is not simplistic. There are a good many twists and turns. One thing I really enjoy in a story is for it to surprise me. This one managed to do that several times.

It is billed as a Young Adult series. I think that is more than fair. As an adult there are still some plot holes that I fall through that would not have bothered me as a younger reader.

If you like YA, science fiction that borders at times on fantasy, and graphic novels (especially when all three are wrapped into one package) give this a try. It is a good way to introduce yourself to Daniel X.

Pedestrian writing bolstered by beautiful artwork

There isn't much to say for the story. It's enjoyable enough. It hits all the marks in this story about an alien boy who can crate reality whole cloth and needs to deal with all the aliens who are out to kill him. Apparently this is just one book in a series of books that James Patterson lent his name to (with others doing the actual writing) and it has some decent qualities. However, most of the writing is fairly pedestrian. YOu get a lot of cliches that sound like teenagers coming up with dialogue that would be "cool" instead of believable. The fact that all of Daniel's best friends have been created from his mind has a lot of potential for angst and exploration of loneliness. This potential is squandered.

However, if you don't expect much, you don't need to get too hung up on the silliness. ANd the art is beautiful so there's that.

Layla is a sobbing mess!

The story line for this book series has a lot of promise and kept me interested. However, I am so sick of seeing so many weak women in book series these days. Yes, she finds her magical soul mate and is overwhelmed by all the harsh things that have happened to her, but she spends all her time either with her legs spread or with her face buried in his chest crying like a 2 year old. I find her character hard to reconcile to a girl who took care of her adoptive mother for 3 years following high school while she was in a coma. That strong independent girl, and this sobbing mess of a woman (who can't be alone more than 5 minutes without becoming hysterical) don't match up for me.
The other characters are great, with all the family members so loving and willing to do anything for Layla. Their community is great.
The sex scenes have become tedious, so I skip pages at a time, bored with the two of them. The amazing level of magic, and the imagination behind it, shows that this author shows great promise. My only issue is, instead of Anastasia constantly biting her lip, we have Layla - constantly hiding, snot flowing, while wailing uncontrollably.

Still a great story, especially for the price. Amazing scenes with great imagery.

Quin's devotion to Layla is enviable. To have the kind of love they have for each other is really magically and probably what every girl dreams of having. The story just keeps getting better and better, though it is kinda sad that there's a lot of dying and killing involved.

Understanding brand power through archetypes

For those marketers who have always had a secret predilection for using their intuition, who've harbored a belief in the hidden power of the right 'fit' in a message - The Hero and The Outlaw reads like a long, drawn-out ahhhhhhhh. Like scratching an itch. Like constant light bulbs going off in your brain, one after another. It drives to the central question behind all the 'buzz' about branding - in what exactly, and where exactly, resides the buried power of a brand? What is its hidden deep source? How come a brand 'pushes our buttons?'
The simple, graceful and very fitting answers are given by Margaret Mark and Carol Pearson in their new book The Hero and The Outlaw - Building Extraordinary Brands Through the Power of Archetypes. When a brand taps into one of their twelve major archetypes, and does so in a way that feels right and appropriate, then the brand 'works.' Consumers respond, a channel of understanding is opened, the message is received.
The twelve archetypal categories which Pearson and Mark use for their analysis are: Creator, Caregiver, Ruler, Jester, Regular Guy/Gal, Lover, Hero, Outlaw, Magician, Innocent, Explorer, Sage. For instance: Williams-Sonoma is a 'creator' brand, and so is going to carry meaning and resonance for consumers who want to craft something new in their lives. Ivory Soap is the 'purest' example of the Innocent archetype. And if Nike is a Hero brand, you can be sure that the Harley-Davidson brand is an Outlaw archetype.
While all the right brain, intuitive marketers are delighted to consider such a workable and insightful way of thinking about branding, rest assured, their more left brain associates have not been 'left' behind. In an wonderfully holistic way, the archetypal wisdom of Jungian author Carol Pearson is met, like yin with yang, in the rigor, testing and real world measurements of Margaret Mark during her 16-year career at Young & Rubicam's senior levels. Like a one-two punch, Pearson and Mark support intuition with quantitative reason, and round out data with connected imagination.
I learned from this book. Advertisements look different to me now, and I can better perceive when a brand is being true to its self and effective in its message (and sometimes, I now know why). Pearson and Mark's idea that using archetypal patterns can be a more morally responsible way of branding, is a small but intriguing thought, offered almost parenthetically.
Very few business books lead me to what feels like an 'epiphany.' (Tom Peters' Search for Excellence did when I first read it in 1989; so did Sally Helgesen's The Female Advantage in 1990, and Margaret Wheatley's Leadership and the New Science a few years ago.) To me, this book feels as though it contains the same sort of breakthrough thinking, but in terms of how to communicate, with power, in an information-saturated world. I highly recommend it. This title provides innovative marketing concepts

Margaret Mark and Carol S. Pearson have wrote a book combining archetypal, mythic figures with modern day marketing. There are many time-tested concepts behind the consumer products we buy and use everyday. At times, we may feel a connection to a product because it's association has been in our archetypal consciousness for many years.
One criticism I have is the book gets into a little too much detail about specific projects and study methods. This happens when the authors talk about clients they have worked with. I don't mean the book is one long advertisement for their marketing consultant services, it is not.
You might appreciate how they relate a core group group of archetypes and how they relate to contemporary consumers. Such as Outlaw, Hero, etc. I found myself comparing these with what is generally called "demographics" and looking for possible fits, depending on the product or services sold.
What I very much appreciate is their mention of those who "manage meaning" have a responsibility to act ethically and think through their advertising and marketing campaigns. Having worked in consumer products and now in advertising, I know this is often not the case.
You'll get a lot out of this read.

From the viewpoint of a 'depressive'
By Straightforward
I enjoyed reading Matt's book on his experience of going through depression; it's part autobiography, part self-help manual - there is very much a sense of the author putting things back in place, mapping out the topography of his own mind and discovering a place where he can comfortably be himself. By putting it all down on paper, he is exorcising the demons in the darkness by exposing them to the light of public examination.

As someone who has also been through the experience of depression for many years and has also arrived at incredibly similar conclusions after coming out the other side, I recognise completely the numb, bleak, monochromatic existence that he describes; the endless days ahead, the wasted days behind. The inability to realise that you have an impact on others, that you even matter. That anything matters.

But it was this that made the 'depression years' in the book seem almost as turgid and endless as going through the experience again for real; by the 80th page, I really was feeling bleak; I started to recognise that familiar 'me me me' narrative that so bored me about myself when I was depressed and talking about it with friends, and reading the book itself almost became like a microcosm of battling with depression itself: were things really going to get better? Would I really start enjoying this book before it was too late? What was wrong with me for not feeling the same joyous giddiness that all the celebs on the covers evidenced in their soundbite quotes? Was I hateful for writing a less-than-glowing review of Matt's very personal and revealing book, risking hurting his feelings for my own subjective self-satisfaction?

Even though this opening part of the book was bleak and uncomfortable to read, I accepted it for what it was and struggled through, adopting the maxim that sometimes, just keeping going is a victory for positivity. There were times when I came close to ending it all and closing the book for good, but - without checking the exact page count - I think the sun finally started to come out after 100 pages. That was too much for me as a depressive to get much out of - it was a hard read; it seemed to be there to function as a 'window into the nightmare' for those who haven't experienced it. They might find it useful, but although cases of depression seem to have similar themes and motifs, they vary in context as much as the sufferers themselves are unique individuals.

After that, when the book deals with where his head's at now, it gets easier. But these are things I wanted more detail on - there are lots of lists, and very very short chapters all through this book, which make it easier to pick up and get into - but they also make the reading experience frustratingly insubstantial at times. Maybe there's something to this book leading the advance against the taboo of depression and suicide - if that's the case, then I hope it performs the function of getting it out into the public arena once and for all.

There were times, when reading, that I felt that pang of wonder and dread that comes when you know exactly what the next sentence is going to be - and there are times when that same sensation of knowing felt like something jaded and predictable; similarly, there were times when I felt the tone of the narrative to be a gentle one, speaking great truths, but it also felt at later times like I was a bed-bound patient being ministered by someone with the bedside manner of Alan Titchmarsh; oozing soothingness and calm to a poor ill person.

Life has brought me to the same conclusions as Matt, though; that's a sign we're both going the right way.

A very thought-provoking read that isn't the magical work of profundity that the publishers seem to want to market it as - that's far too much expectation to have for what is essentially a very humble enterprise; that of an author working through what happened to him in the most natural way possible for him - via his pen. It is a work of kindness, and of good intention; it is a work of reason, and a testament to the powers of the mind; but I feel that it's being hyped into something that the author never intended it to be.

This book is useful for those who wish to get an idea of what it feels like to go through depression. It would also be useful to someone in the middle of a depressive episode, I suppose. Personally I was both pleased and disappointed by this book - pleased that we had arrived at almost exactly the same perspective on life, but disappointed that I could therefore only confirm my existing beliefs rather than challenge them and learn something new.

Finally, my views on happiness, how to find it, and how to keep it (as Matt finishes in the same way himself):

1) All that exists is the moment of 'now'. Everything else - the past and the future - is in your head. Leave the past behind you; it has gone. By being positive in the present moment, you are sowing seeds of good possibilities for the future; there is no need to dwell modbidly on what is yet to happen.

2) Being kind to others, and having your actions affect others in a positive way will make all parties a lot happier.

3) Diversity of choice produces stress, not happiness. Keep it simple.

4) Don't let your mind tell you downers. When you catch yourself having miserable thoughts, take positive action be reinforcing the upbeat, truthful alternative - even if you don't feel like you are.

5) Your mind can be trained like a dog. A repeated action becomes a habit after three weeks or so. Acquire positive habits, drop the negative ones.

6) Don't judge. It's not as simple as 'succeed' or 'fail'. Just accept and be open to what is.

7) Exercise makes the body happy

8) EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT.

9) Your good mood deserves protection - it is fragile and valuable. Your good mood is stronger than the bad mood of others.

10) You can always do better tomorrow.

11) People feel happier if they have a purpose.

12) Everyone's life is different. Everyone comes to terms with their life in their own way.

Ultimately I'm a bit disappointed by this book, but I totally recognise the story; I liked it without getting as excited as everyone else seems to be doing.

Real.

A copy of this book was given to me by a good friend.

It is ironic (is that the right word I wonder?) that the author who gave me my first reason to stay alive, at a time when I struggled to find one – with his previous novel, The Humans – then went on to write openly, elegantly and with no holds barred, about his own experiences of depression and anxiety. And called it “Reasons to Stay Alive” If I was better with words myself I could probably find a better one than Ironic. But it will have to do.

I would normally at this point I guess, wax lyrical about how beautifully Mr Haig writes and how he gets me every time. Which is true of course, but not what this book needs. I’ve read a lot of non fiction about Depression and related issues during the time that I have been trying to understand my own mindset, my own experience, but what Matt has done is simply talk about it honestly. In the end, if you want to try and understand it, this is what you need – open, frank and truthful words that paint a picture and allow you in.

I shall be keeping a copy of it close by for sure, for the next 3am where I think perhaps dying would be better.

I’ve given it 5 stars obviously, but this is not a book to be rated. It is one to be read – by anyone who suffers, has suffered, lives with someone who suffers and ALL the people in between – one of the most important books you may ever read about the human condition.

Brave, sincere, genuine and inspirational. That is all.

Courageous and valuable book offering real insight into the nature of depression, its many challenges and its unexpected gifts

This is such a valuable book.
In having the courage to tell his own story of recovery from the deepest depths of despair Matt Haig offers powerful insights into the nature of depression and anxiety. Since 2005 Matt has been an increasingly successful author; his first book was written whilst he was still in the very firm grip of the illness. His books are award winning (Shadow Forest) and are set to be filmed (The Radleys)
Matt's decision to tell his story came out of the reaction to his novel The Humans which tells of mental illness and the isolation of those who suffer.

Depression dropped on Matt out of nowhere, and he quickly found everyday interactions impossible. After three days in bed wondering what was happening to him, he stepped outside and came within inches of taking his own life at the edge of a cliff in Ibiza. The fact that he didn't and has written an account of his state of mind at the time is perhaps an insight into those who take their own lives suddenly leaving loved ones mystified. Matt could have made that decision within hours of depression dropping upon him and nobody would have known why, if he did not tell of it.

Matt's long slow fight back is carefully chronicled in short insightful chapters. The unstinting love and support he received from his girlfriend Andrea, the repeated panic attacks that set him back, the anxiety he felt. His depression was a whole mix of emotions, but time passed and gradually he improved. The panic attacks became controllable; his life began to open out again. Books and writing were instrumental in his recovery.

The book is also a plea for more understanding of depression. Matt writes that 'Depression is a thin skin'; the late Spike Milligan wrote how those with depression were ' a skin short'. This thin skin is what has made Matt the person he is and more appreciative of life's wonders; his creative gifts have a deeper well of resources to draw on. Control of his illness has enabled Matt to use the gifts that the thin skin has brought him. He is able to feel more alive, more in touch with life.

It's not an easy read, but it is an exceptionally worthwhile read for anyone who wants to gain insight into the nature of depression. What it doesn't offer are quick solutions, for there are none but it offers hope and it offers understanding .

About the Author
In 1854 at the age of twenty-four, John Miller Dow Meiklejohn translated Immanuel Kant’s "Critique of Pure Reason" into English and it would remain the standard translation for many years. However, it was in another area of Victorian writing that Meiklejohn’s name would become celebrated. He wrote and published the most comprehensive set of schoolbooks, lesson materials and instructional texts for schoolmasters yet seen in an English-speaking classroom. Foremost and longest lasting among those books was "The English Language: its Grammar, History and Literature" (1886), which reached over thirty editions in Britain, the U.S.A. and the British Commonwealth. This revised edition marks the 125th anniversary of its first publication by Blackwood and Sons in London. The book was intended to provide novice teachers with a more complete understanding of the English Language. From this book they could then create their own lessons for their own students. Modern teachers of English worldwide have a similar requirement and it is the aim of this modern edition of the book to help them obtain it.

The Ultimate Teacher's Guide to English Usage

As a former English major and ESL teacher I have long felt that the generation following mine was poorly equipped to teach English grammar to mainstream or ESL students. The students of the seventies and eighties (when the teaching of grammar was sorrily lacking) were themselves missing many of the basics necessary to impart the historically correct principles of this complex language to others. Although I understand that languages constantly evolve as new or previously unacceptable words and phrases become common parlance, it is still important for teachers to have a solid grounding in basic terminology and in grammatical and syntactic rules. This is especially true for those teaching ESL, as many students' native language is based on entirely different structures.
Enter Fraser's new book, a revision and expansion of the grammar and history of the English language. As complete and comprehensive study of its development and usage would be hard to find. It is logically organized, exhaustive in its scope and full of clear, often colourful examples of the point being made. His section on word branching, including many words that have their roots in Latin, Greek or other antique tongues, can be very useful for students studying advanced English, where the root can be transferred to form or recognize other words encountered. Even the story of the evolution of Modern English is itself of interest.
This tome is probably too exhaustive for ESL students to plough through. However, a teacher could use this book as his one go-to reference guide for any grammatical or syntactic question, and be assured that he has everything he needs at this source to impart the required knowledge to his students. I would call this book indispensable for your bookshelf. An admirable achievement!

In everyday parlance many things are described as "Awesome", or "Truly awesome". And along with a diminution of our vocabulary there seems to be an increasing tendency to ignore grammatical structures: for example "This just in"; "I'm like really there...".
All languages develop and change but the narrowing of vocabulary and the increasing reliance on ungrammatical and over-used slogans and phrases can make our language colorless and lacking in discernment.
Well written and spoken sentences provide a much more clear, accurate and precise meaning to the reader and listener and this is why Fraser McKen's book "Professor Meiklejohn's Grammar and History of the English Language" can be very useful to those who write and speak English.
The book is a renovation of Professor Meiklejohn's original work, first published in 1886. McKen has brought this book into the twenty-first century by updating the grammatical usage and by expanding many of the concepts and examples.
McKen's book meets the needs of four different audiences.
Firstly the book can be used by students who are learning English. The rules of grammar are clearly explained with an abundance of examples and applications. Non-English speakers often find the English language to be confusing and contradictory where the rules seem to be applied in an arbitrary and conflicting manner.
Thus when such English learners have questions about verbs matching nouns they can find the answers in the McKen/Meiklejohn book. The book is also an excellent background resource for such learners. For example, Meiklejohn clearly demonstrates the different ways that gender can be denoted and gives the origin of such terms.
The second audience is teachers of English. Any question about the origin or development of a word or a syntax can usually be answered. English teachers can be confident they can answer whatever question about language that their students can pose. For example, a common question asked of an English teacher relates to the use of "that" or "which" as a conjunction: another puzzle for students of English when to use a plural verb when the subject it a collective noun, like "committee" or "herd". McKen lucidly resolves these questions.
The book is also useful to those linguists who are interested in studying the structure and development of English in depth, including those who study the structure of poetry, "prosody". Meiklejohn illustrates the development of English vocabulary and grammar through different periods and discusses landmarks that have occurred at specific times. This includes a discussion of the influences of Norman French and different types of Latin.
Lastly, the book is full of interesting facts that would be eagerly devoured by "knowledge junkies" , those of us who enjoy crosswords and similar puzzles. For example, we often think of the King James Bible as an example of mainly 17th century English, whereas most of the language used was based on 16th century structure and usage.
Although the book can meet the needs of various audiences, there is often no demarcation between the needs of a new English learner and those of a more knowledgeable reader . Thus an explanation of active and passive verbs leads to an extensive discussion of various verb types and tenses; a new English learner may not be looking for such a detailed discourse.
The book belongs on the shelf of an English Teacher or Professor. It is a valuable tool in the teaching and study of English.

The world needs this book.

It's my hope that teachers will use this book well before high school. As far as I know most teenagers are totally unaware of terms as simple as verb, noun, subject, object.

As for verbal use has anyone listened to the CBC lately? Even the venerable Globe and Mail needs this book. Let's hope we all benefit from the work of Mr. McKen. Bravo.
