About the Author
Nathan Rohlander's bright, vibrant paintings have been featured in the pages of Esquire and Shuz magazines, on the cover of Coast magazine, in Super Bowl commercials, in numerous television shows, and even in MTV videos. Having graduated with honors and a fine arts degree from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, Nathan is currently working toward a master of fine arts at California State University, Long Beach. Nathan lives and works in Los Angeles, but he has spent considerable time in Europe, South America, and Asia, where he has been able to gain creative inspiration and refine his global perspective. Nathan's work is featured in two Walter Foster Publishing titles: Acrylic: Still Lifes, in the How to Draw and Paint Series; and in The Artist's Source Book: 80 Acrylic Painting References. Nathan lives in Los Angeles, CA.

excellent and enjoyable

This How to Draw book from the series of that name offers practical skills to capture the likeness and render lifelike features when drawing the head. It gives sample drawings featuring different poses, expressions and skin tones. It starts with an overview of materials then goes on to the basic shape of the head illustrating a face on and side view of the head with the placement of the facial features and the latter are also dealt with in detail too. Exercises to build skill include foreshortening, contour and planar drawings, additive and subtractive charcoal and understanding values, working in black and white on tonal paper and pastel portraits. Tips are included for conveying personality. Each exercise is presented with an overview, step by step instructions and excellent drawings showing the stages of building up a portrait. If you have been having difficulty with any of the above points, or are new to drawing heads, this should set you firmly on the right path. It is thorough, easy to use and I think it will enhance your drawing skills. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

Flimsy booklet

This book does show a lot of good tips for drawing . What I didn't like about this book is that every thing is cramped into as few pages as possible . This is a larger size book as far as the dimensions but it has a lot fewer pages than most drawing books and every thing is just sort of bunched up inside. This comes off as being more of a flimsy booklet than a real book. So, if you don't mind what your paying for this booklet ,then it's ok.

I love these little guides. I've been drawing for years and hope to pass these down to my kids someday. They're very informative and easy to use.
